Looking for "SeaDoo for Dad" - 108' Sunseeker

One thing on the story that makes no sense. The Coast Guard was waiting for him, tried to stop him, and he wouldn't stop??????

I've never seen that end with the guy just driving away.....

A lot of the story doesn't make sense...........

There are plenty of pics/locations of the boat.....Where are the pics of the damaged boats/docks. One of the links mentioned a deck/hull separation and swim platform ripped off.....but not one pic?

R'Addictions got photos of the damage to and around his boat; don't know about shots of the hull/deck damage he told me about. If you check the BoaterEd thread, there are plenty of eyewitness accounts. Even giving the guy the benefit of the doubt regarding the "No Wake" signs, he has had an opportunity to man up and chose not to.

I'm believing the other stuff, and just wondering about the Coast Guard trying to intercept and him running away???? I've never known them to back off??? Maybe they weren't really ready with an interception?? Or, he agreed to go to a mutual site and we don't know the story yet.

No wake is irrelevant. You're legally responsible for the damage your boat causes.

As far as the USCG- they're armed. And I do believe they're authorized to fire upon vessels disobeying commands in order to halt their progress.

I'm going to PM Brad and ask him to weigh in on this.

That sucks. :(:cuss:

I was out fishing last saturday morning on the Chesapeake and I believe that I saw this boat heading North on the Bay. When was it seen in B'more?

If the guy is indeed in port (NYC) now, a phone call to the CG should be made!

Brad?

True, you are responsible for your wake no matter where you are. Why would someone with a captains license even take the chance? Or I guess it could've been the owner driving, and it'll get blamed on the captain:driving:

It was tied up Saturday night. Tracking records show 39 17.085N / -76 36.3945W at 7:00 AM on Sunday. Google Earth puts that next to the Aquarium, as the photos showed earlier in the thread. Most recent tracking showed it in NYC at the North Point Marina this morning.

I don't get it guy's, I have seen this play out on other boating forums. Some guy would do something another would bring it up giving no information other than name of the boat within hours the guy's SS# address everything would be on the internet. I am shocked that no one has found out his information yet

So far, no luck...

It's the foreign registry thing I guess......

The boat's registered in Georgetown, Cayman Islands, not documented in the US. Someone will have to figure out how to crack into the Caymans Freedom of Information site and make the request. Many high-$$ yachts are listed under holding companies anyway...

This guy's moving fast. Tied up in Newport, RI now: 41 28.8252N / -71 19.0956W at the foot of Pope Street, looks like Casey's Marina. Any SOS members in the area?

I can't seem to get any of the local web cams to work...

Right down the street. I can check it out tomorrow mornng. My friend runs that marina, when he gets in I can see if he'll give me a name that the reservation is under.

Not as simple as it sounds or thought to be.

1. Taxes are only one reason larger boats are not flagged in the US. Jones Act, Class Societies, Insurance, etc. These are called flags of convienance and used in commercial shipping as well. How many large frieght and tank ships do you see with an American Flagged compared to foreign.

WAKE= Displacement wave signature Wake is the wrong vocabulary. (not imortant)

Anyway you will never find anything in 33 CFR calling out or saying you are responsible for your wake. You can be held liable for damage arrising or caused from your wake if Boating Accident Reports (BARS) are issued and filed by those affected. These BAR's are filed within the state of occurance or state of principal use.

The operator can be cited for negligent operation if a Coast Guard Boarding Officer, State or local marine officer enforcing Boating safety laws witnesses the incident or collects statements from witnesses.

Negligent operation or grossly negligent operation must be adequatley articulated by the enforcement officer in order to achieve a desired outcome.

When these type of issues occur and law enforcement does not immediately respond you must document all damage and injury and contact your local state boating law office and submit a report. The damage is required to exceed $500 and the injury must be beyond first aid. Short of this your only recourse is to file an insurance claim and have your insurance company go after the other party.

The local or state law may have further consequences if the operator violated a designated boating safety zone or if a violation of rule 6 (safe Speed) can be articulated.

That is about it...File reports through the State.

IRT the Coast Guard boarding it is highly unlikely the operator failed to stop or was otherwise evasive. If this did occur I am sure the follow up will be appropriate. I will not disclose the standing rules of engagement or use of force policy in a public forum.

StaySafe

Brad

R'Addiction told me this afternoon that the boat was flying a Canadian flag. Bombardier Recreational Products (parent company of Sea-Doo) is based in Quebec. What happens if he crosses the border?

C Spray, I just read your post on YachtForum. Are there more pictures online, other than the ones on OSO, BoatersEd and here?
None of those pictures show a Canadian Flag.
The Cayman Islands flag looks sort of like the Ontario flag.

Sorry Steve, It was a very stressful situation and I didn't get my camera out. I was more worried about my wife and the other people on the dock. The police officer took all the pictures of all the damage.

Steve, You watch car races to see wrecks don't you?
