Where to purchase crate motors?

Disclaimer to the cam comment.... unless you meant buying raw blocks and starting from scratch. Then you would have somebody who knows marine do your cams.

Don't let the inappropriate cam and the resulting reversion when used with mixing exhaust tails stop you.:leaving:

 I read about that I am not scared:ack2:what does that do again:rofl: Just joking but if I was to have a marine engine builder build them. You can use the same 4 bolt block change the plugs to brass make sure that you use marine parts right? The last engine I had built was a 502MPI and I wanted to learn more about the process when ti was getting built but dod not have the chance. So this time it will be different

Never had twins was liking the fuel use of a single so I thought hey why not small blocks

Merc also made a limited run of 400 hp small blocks... come complete with headers! ;) http://sites.mercurymarine.com/portal/page?_pageid=33,69423&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

In all seriousness, I think a boat that size and weight you'll be a lot happier with the extra torque of the big block. Small blocks do have their place though, 30 ft and under, I'm just not so sure your application is the best.

The places I listed above should be able to get you decent deals on turn-key packages.

Thanks for your help, the 400hp small blocks are light weight and easy to work around, and I thought the fuel economy would be better. I really don't drive too fast around 35-45ish. But with that being said the big block might not be too bad on the fuel also. I heard that merc had a ton of the higher HP small blocks and were trying to get trid of them cheap, as complete crate motors. I will not go anything over 502mpi unless the deal is right. I really don't need that power.

They were, that's how my buddy got the package we put in his SeaRay. I don't remember the cost but I think everything complete with the Bravo III was something like $12K. the only reason you don't see these packages sold thru regular mercury marine is because most of the are carbureted and with the new emissions rules they're flying under the radar as a "reman".

Easiest project I ever did... Just unbolt the old chit and bolt the new chit in with a warranty ta boot!

I haven't seen or heard the 400's but it sounds kinda cool! Hey, you can be our test mule! :leaving::driving:

As far as cruise, the small blocks will work to get your cruise, you just wont have the top end.. My buddy's 28' powerplay cruises around 50 mph with 350 mpi's.

I want MPI so this most likely won't work. And for the 400's I meant HP @ 400 out of the small block sorry my bad. Sunsation has built the 32' with small blocks and the top speed GPS is 68.7 which is great for my wife and I but the boat is for sale and is not selling and that is most likely why. I was looking at that boat but my attention has been re-directed as of today we will see what happens. I think my best bet is to find some engines that need to be rebuilt and do it up right big blocks of course with my cruise speed they won't be too bad on the fuel I think.

You're probably going to find that your best bet is to pick up a bargain on a used, together and functioning boat. Unless you put new merc in the boat whatever you put in is going to be worth less the second you bolt it in.

And you have to assume something is wrong in the drives- you have no way of determining otherwise.

Based on alot of experiences with alot of projects, unless this is a special boat that you just have to have, or unless you're literally stealing it, you're going to put more money into it than you think. Maybe way more. And if this is your first trip to the rodeo on a project boat, assume not only more $$ but more time.

There's some great value to be found in being able to operate and have surveyed your prospective purchase before laying down your cash.
