Discuss thoughts, ideas etc all you want. character assassination will not be tolerated here. I spent a lot of time last weekend shaking hands and talking up the site to many people who have not been here. I did NOT invite people to the site too see personal attacks. This thread needs to be cleaned up, if for no other reason than out of respect for the people who are working to make this place grow and thrive.

Good point.
:)

True, true. I'm glad he changed it. :sifone:

Clay, I'm with the rest on that one. A statement that you really should apologize for. Came out wrong? Then make things right......

A discussion about the expense of personal choices and consequenses is one thing, a statement like that is flat wrong......

Does everyone understand??

And for the record, if I had been killed in the race, my personal choice would have negated my insurance.....

OK. I apologize for my poor choice of words in the original title of this thread. It was harsh and wrong. I'm glad it was changed.

This thread was supposed to be about personal responsibility.

Sorry.

I knew that there was tons of ignorance about health care out there.

Didn't realize that there were people who actually believe that all obesity is caused by an abundance of twinkies and a lack of self control.

Thanks all, now let's keep acting like we really want to help with a solution instead of like a bunch of politicians who just want to make headlines for re-election purposes.

You take people to McDonalds for a happy meal for dinner and you talk of self control:rofl::rofl:

They spent more thought on the Whitehouse dog than they did healthcare.

Ignorance is bliss....and makes for good blogging...:(

Yet another flawed study trying to implicate a portion of the population as being responsible for an "abnormally large" %-age of costs.

Not ALL obese people are that way because of their diet; for some it's genetic.

Not ALL diabetes sufferers are obese. But this "study" assigns the cost of diabetes treatment to mostly obese people.

So what exactly does "pay for your own healthcare" include? If someone has insurance, it's ok that they're obese and get treatment? Or if someone is engaged in any fashion of risky behavior, they're not entitled to any treatment unless they pay for 100% of the costs?

Anybody that "pays" for their own healthcare through insurance premiums, is already subsidizing people with risky behavior. And I'd like to thank all of you for contributing to help pay for my busted leg when I was racing motorcycles. Suckers...:biggrinjester:

The original post is a great premise and I agree with a lot of it in theory, but how the heck do you enforce it, like others have said where do you draw the line. Fat, smoke, drugs, alcohol, tanning beds, risky behavior (sports, hobbies) the list goes on. I have two neighbors that are at least 50 to 100 lbs overweight, neither are on any meds and hardly have to go to the doctor, yet I know 5 people in the neighborhood that have had lots of expensive surgery done because of risky sports, and others that are always getting some type of test because they think they have a problem. Heck, Ian had expensive surgery because he fell watersking, if he had not water skied that day our insurance company would have saved thousands. I also know several people that are normal weight, yet their blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides are very high. They continue to eat bacon, ice cream, all sorts of fatty food and drink a bunch of Pepsi's each day all while taking prescriptons to control the problem. Since they are lucky and manage to stay at normal weight they get a pass while fat people would have to pay extra. Also while there are plenty of legit stories of why working people can't pay for health care there are many that opt out and spend their money on other things while some scrimp and give up things to pay for their families health insurance. I know both types and some of those without health insurance actually make more money. A lot of the ones that opt out of paying for their own insurance work in cash jobs like home improvement contractors, cleaning people, lawn care etc so. It's usually a double whammy because they usually make more than what if any is reported to the IRs. This is such a big problem that I would not know where to begin to make it fair.
