New racing class - unlimited offshore

Just curious of how technologically advanced does a sport that gets little to no media attention need to be?? when safety is concerned one cannot spend enough! But with today's economy, sponsorship=how deep are your pockets! One has to ask is this advancement or just another repeat of the past??

I understand what you're saying but aren't the pockets all already pretty deep in extreme/unlimited? Its not a poor mans class to start with.

I think its great to see some of the toys/gadgets that these guys use (JBS's set up comes to mind). Somebody should be using it... trying it. I can remember when I thought GPS was amazing....... pretty standard now. :)

THIS IS NOT A SPEC CLASS... IF A RACER IS LOOKING FOR SPEC....there is GREAT racing in 850 and Supercat light.

If you can dream it, build it or race it.....bring it. If you want to try canards, hooks or wings come run us. Victory....it would be a pleasure, Fountain...this is your chance. As long as the Safety team approves it you can run it. We want racers to push technology not hold it back. This is Unlimited Offshore Racing

This is the right stuff. Enough of the racing that us old guys really don't understand...like "Let me see you won, but they say you broke out and were 1 / 100th over the speed limit, so now you lose??"

Dream it, build it, bring it and make the courses challenging enough, so you can really call it offshore racing again...you got it!

I just hope that the few teams that are running next year pick the same races to run. This is all kinda moot if only one team shows up.

I love the idea of advancing the technology. I am, however, still confused about the whole qualifying process and inshore courses. I assume the starting position that you qualify for is only there until the green flag drops. How long do you have to hold that lane? How can you judge a qualifying time on an offshore course? Hell, you can't judge the next 100 yards. It's not like asphalt that stays the same for every racer. Will the qualifier be on the course by himself? Why not include 1 long offshore leg (rough water), and then run the inshore laps. I think it's a much better test of the equipment and the racers.

Charlie, We will try to incorporate "true offshore" events like your Bimini run

Sean, it is what it is. The teams have tentatively committed to at least eight races together. We have 12- 15 on our schedule. Can't make racers show up.

Smoke, don't be confused. it's simple. fastest time gets lane choice. 150 feet min on lane change over 150 MPH. "Dive in" on a 3800HP cat with running hot coming off a 180 MPH run to the first pin...penalty assessed immediately

Qualifier will be on the course by themself for three laps, How do you judge? Smoke, remember it's for lane choice and gives you a chance to set your boat up for the next day. Long lap to difficult to impliment right now.

Where is all this technology found , more than likely the aerospace industry, and other forms of racing. And what ends up happening is they outspend the competition until they are all gone. As for as safety is concerned, have there been any tests of the effects on the current canopy systems at over 200 mph??? Many have pushed the envelope, and paid the ultimate price.

just a few, even in Unlimited hydros there are limitations.
and as Clint said "a man's got to know his limitations"

Like the old days when it was a 1000 cubic inches and the rest was up to you!

Marc,

That is exactly my thought. My understanding is that there are some unhappy professional racers in Class One, which you have had the pleasure of meeting. I would envision with a little added HP they would do quite well here in the USA. The housing market is dream for them over here.....no time like the present to set up a new US program!

Technology is found borrowed or stole in the mental cleverness of the designer and builders, safety is going to have to be pushed up a level also. But the forces involved here are not unknown.

I have seen canopy failure personally and a friend lost his life right in front of me (his wife just had twin boys that morning)

Maybe the forces are known thru a computer generated program, Both cars and planes are rigoriously tested, Boat Canopies are NOT! When it is time to use them, and for the sake of the sport and the souls on board it better work.

I think it's a great idea. It could be wrong, and only very few boats get in this class due to the economy and $ required. But, if it works and several teams compete, great.. I doubt you'll see a Fountain, or any other Vee, though.

All the boats currently running have enhanced cockpits with significantly more Wind screen and Canopy structure than the avg canopy boat running. Is it enough? let's hope we don't find out. But look at it this way, new competitors and builders will be designing and building stronger new equipment that benefits all classes. I know of some VERY cool new stuff in development.
