Need a little help

Cuda, I am so sorry to hear this I was just thinking about you a few days ago wondering why we have not heard much from you. I know you don't have family close and your parents are elderly, who is helping you understand all this you really need some sort of patient advocate or someone that can help you cut through all this information.

I don't get it, on several of their web pages it talkes about serving people from not just all over FL but from all over the country, and it also looks like they also help people that can not pay.
I have never heard of a hospital that you can't get into because you live in the wrong county.
I feel like calling the hospital myself. Cuda's been around these offshore sites a long time, prehaps we should all start calling or emailing on his behalf.

Shands HealthCare is the state's only not-for-profit healthcare system that treats patients from every county in Florida. Our organization exerts a powerful social and economic impact within the state, and we're committed to our role as a responsible corporate citizen.

For the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2008, Shands provided unsponsored community benefits at costs totaling $124.7M. These include financial assistance, community health services, health professions education, research and donations.

I hesitate to reply to threads like this of people I don't know. Man this is a crock. Godspeed Cuda and I hope a solution is quick in coming.

I don't like to put my troubles out there, like a friend of mine say, "Don't tell your friends your problems, tell your enemies.

Be that as it may, if there is anyone who can pull a couple strings to help me to get into Shand's Hospital at the University of Florida, I could use the help.

The problem is I have a brain tumor, it's not cancerous of anything, but has affected my ability to walk, and my memory is fading fast. It's called acoustic neuroma. I've about exhausted every avenue I know to be admitted there. I need what they call a "gamma knife" for the surgery to remove the tumor. The problem is that I live in the wong county. I live in Volusia County, and Shands is in Alachua County. I contacted Shands, and sent them the MRI reports. The head of neurosurgery said I was a perfect candidate for the gamma knife. The doctor's office manager said she could get me right in, but that's where the trouble started. She then asked about medical coverage. Since I live in the wrong county, they can't get me in. There is still a lady named Sherry, trying to get me admitted.

Shands gets most of it's funding through the state, and federal government. My cousin is a doctor in an ER in New Orleans. My aunt called him, and he called Shands. I've contacted the governor, and my US senator (Mel Martinez). I don't know if they have the time, or the willingness to help. It's crunch time. If it takes much longer, I'll be a total invalid. I'm not much of a proponent of socialized medicine, but I see no reason to not be treated based on the sole fact I live in the wrong county

Cuda, try Wayne STate University up here in Michigan. Terri's Mom had gamma knife surgery there and they were an excellent group. I don't think it would matter where you are from. That's on the other side of the state from us, but we drove over there many times.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Paul

He is one of the best in the world. You can name drop a patient, Lisa Harriman if you like. Please let me know if we can help.

Oh for Fack's sake - this just hit me like a ton of bricks
Joe, I know you've had a rough road to deal with for a little while now. I'm sure this is nothing you needed to deal with right now.
But you're a tough old guy - you can handle this.
Wish I could be of more help.
If there is any way we can help collectively, I'm sure we are all there for you.
Keep that stiff chin, and kick this thing in the azz!!

Joe, why can`t you rent an apartment or something in that county and use that address ?

Not sure of your faith, but I`m praying for you.

Damn Cuda, sorry to hear about your condition. I wish you the best in getting past this.
My sister's going to Med school at Stetson in Deland, I'll ask her if she knows anyone with any influence. Good luck.

Thanks Nick. Do you ever get over here? My parents came Wednesday, and are leaving tomorrow.

Wow, Not quite sure I know how to help but we do wish you the best of luck in getting this resolved. Seems you have taken the appropriate steps. One idea, just show up there one day complaining of a major headache and see what they do. Hospitals as far as I know can't refuse service.

Thought about that. Find a hospital and do my best bacon frying routine, grab my head, and complain of a massive headache.

were you in the military ? If so you could try via the Veterans hospital in that area.

Nope. I almost enlisted in the Navy when I thought I was going to be drafted. I wish I'd done my 20 in the military.

Cuda first off, thoughts and prayers are with you.
Second, I am talking with my cousin who is a neurologist in NJ to see if he has any connections down your way.

Thanks. I'm not even scheduled to see a neurologist until March 30, and I was diagnosed in September. At this rate, I'll be room temp by the time I get in.:(

What if you went into the ER and got admitted that way? I would think they would have to treat you. If you were a no speak they would take you. Best of luck and I wish I could do more. You could always take your records and fly to another hospital like Duke or Mass General and go in to their ER.

There are only a handful of hospitals in the state with the gamma knife, Shands being one of them.

Actually my parents came here on Wednesday, and are going back to St Pete tomorrow. Dad made a call to Jackson Memorial (UM) today while I was working (12 hrs), waded through half an hour of transfering phone to phone, to find out the basically, make an appointment, fill out some papers, and get in to see a doc. They have the gamma knife there.

I will call my GF's father in the morning. He is a professor down there and knows alot of people. I have no idea if he knows the right people, or can do anything to help, but it's worth a shot. I am sorry to hear about this. Hang in there.

My wife and I will pray that a solution will appear to this situation , cuda - hang in there - jeff

My cousin just came here two weeks ago to help me out from Milwaulkee, Oregon. I'd really be screwed if it weren't for him.
