Need a little help

I don't like to put my troubles out there, like a friend of mine say, "Don't tell your friends your problems, tell your enemies.

Be that as it may, if there is anyone who can pull a couple strings to help me to get into Shand's Hospital at the University of Florida, I could use the help.

The problem is I have a brain tumor, it's not cancerous of anything, but has affected my ability to walk, and my memory is fading fast. It's called acoustic neuroma. I've about exhausted every avenue I know to be admitted there. I need what they call a "gamma knife" for the surgery to remove the tumor. The problem is that I live in the wong county. I live in Volusia County, and Shands is in Alachua County. I contacted Shands, and sent them the MRI reports. The head of neurosurgery said I was a perfect candidate for the gamma knife. The doctor's office manager said she could get me right in, but that's where the trouble started. She then asked about medical coverage. Since I live in the wrong county, they can't get me in. There is still a lady named Sherry, trying to get me admitted.

Shands gets most of it's funding through the state, and federal government. My cousin is a doctor in an ER in New Orleans. My aunt called him, and he called Shands. I've contacted the governor, and my US senator (Mel Martinez). I don't know if they have the time, or the willingness to help. It's crunch time. If it takes much longer, I'll be a total invalid. I'm not much of a proponent of socialized medicine, but I see no reason to not be treated based on the sole fact I live in the wrong county

Just say you are an immigrant with no insurance. It seems the we treat others better than we treat our own.

I wish you a speedy recovery and best of luck.

Damn Cuda, sorry to hear about your condition. I wish you the best in getting past this.
My sister's going to Med school at Stetson in Deland, I'll ask her if she knows anyone with any influence. Good luck.

Sorry to hear that cuda. How about go rent an apt in the correct county. A few months rent is better than the alternative.

Wow, Not quite sure I know how to help but we do wish you the best of luck in getting this resolved. Seems you have taken the appropriate steps. One idea, just show up there one day complaining of a major headache and see what they do. Hospitals as far as I know can't refuse service.

Sorry to hear this cuda. Prayers that things work out well for you. Personally I can't believe they won't treat you just because you live outside the county.

Crazy.

Cuda, first Godspeed in beating this thing.

Second, have you talked with Johns Hopkins University/Hospital in Baltimore, MD?
I can find out the name of the Dr. who performed a miracle on a good friend of mine. She had a golf ball sized tumor beside her brain stem, entering the top of her spine; and he yanked that bad boy out the old fashioned way. She is with us today and doing fantastic.

Cuda first off, thoughts and prayers are with you.
Second, I am talking with my cousin who is a neurologist in NJ to see if he has any connections down your way.

Sorry to hear this Cuda. I don't know anyone off hand, but I have some friends in Orlando. Can you establish residency using one of their home addy's?

Sorry to hear about this, Cuda. It must be frustrating - especially since they describe themselves as one of the State's "safety net" hospitals (?). Going to the Gov. or Senator may not help, but a state senator or rep from your district might have the time to look into it. Also - I can't find their Board of Directors on the site - but targeting someone specific in that group and having a bunch of friends (like you have here) speak up thoughtfully on your behalf might be a place to start. If we can find the right person, that's a place to start, perhaps.

Good Luck Cuda......

Sounds like an Insurance problem?......Do you mean the Medical Coverage will not cover the procedure because the Hospital is in another County?

If so.... Have the Doctors and Hospital call the Dept. of Insurance and explain the situation......they can put some heat on the Carrier.

What if you went into the ER and got admitted that way? I would think they would have to treat you. If you were a no speak they would take you. Best of luck and I wish I could do more. You could always take your records and fly to another hospital like Duke or Mass General and go in to their ER.

Damn Bro... Sorry to hear this news. Unfortunately I dont have any connections with this sort of thing. But my thoughts go out to you. I hope it works out well. Let me know if there is anything I can help you out with though..

Wow Cuda, My prayers are with you, if you need anything please call me - wish I knew someone at the hospital to help get you in... Maybe the others are right, just show up in the ER - they can't turn you away....

xxoo,
Heather
