1st Entry into the "DON ARONOW MEMORIAL AROUND LONG ISLAND MARATHON" 9-18-10

JOHN RUGGIERI, The 'King of Long Island Sound', with the Trophy to prove it, has entered his 40' Activator V-Bottom, "WHITE LIGHTNING", powered by twin-turbocharged CHIEF Engines and #6 Merc speedmasters, into the Don Aronow Memorial Marathon Race Around Long Island.
The boat is capable of running 119 mph, but speed is not the only factor...navigation and endurance will play a big part in placing in this 271 mile event.
Guy LaMotta's Manhasset Bay Marina and Restaurant will host the event and many NPBA Hall of Famer's plan on attending and even competing once again.
Some of the past winners also will be attending...This will be the "OFFSHORE" PLACE TO BE for this Sept 18th event...and reactivate the Perpetual MANHASSET BAY GOLD CUP TROPHY
The present record, established in 1989 after 3 attempts, is held by Stu Hayim in his 32 Skater, "RECOVERY" with 650 HP Eickert Engines, Merc Speedmasters and Joey Impresscia on throttles...3 hours and 6 minutes with 1 fuel stop at Montauk...that averages out to 87.42 mph as his overall average speed.

This is a chance to do a real open ocean race with the chance of water that will be the equalizer. Calmer waters on the north side of Long Island for the start.....the faster boats will build up some leads...BUT the ocean on the south side, will even the playing field.

If you remember HORBA started the first open ocean revival with the Sunny Isles to Bimini race three years ago....but due to the seasonal conditions in Miami in June, it turned out to be much calmer than usual...last years race had the same conditions with the lead boat averaging over 140 MPH. Fantastic speed!!

September in the North Atlantic should be more of a challenge for the boaters from the Northeast who want real open ocean conditions.

We should have the type of water that makes this race worthy of the Don Aronow name. He raced over these exact same waters and had many great memories. Come on out and race in the wake of Don and many of the other greats that competed in this race.
