AROUND LONG ISLAND RALLY

In the summer of 1959, a bunch of Long Island boat dealers started a marathon race around Long Island, as a way to promote their own businesses.
Over the many years this event has run and been known under various names, the one constant factor that attracted competitors is, the challenge of completing the circumnavigation of a 271 mile island regardless of the weather.
As a way to celebrate both the 60th Anniversary of the founding of this ALI race and the 50th Anniversary of Don Aronow's 1969 UIM World Championship,

The following boats are eligible to enter:
HISTORIC OFFSHORE RACE BOATS
Class 1.... 1960 TO 1979 era race boats only
Class 2.... 1980 to 1999 era race boats only
Class 3 .... 2000 to 2009 era race boats only

MODERN BOATS
Class 4.... Center Consoles
Class 5.... Sport Deck Deep Vees
Class 6 ....Sport Deck Catamarans
Class 7.... Cruisers

Classes 1, 2, and 3 have to be race boats? You can't run an era specific offshore boat that was not a race boat?

271 miles, half on the ocean side of Long Island, is quite the little trip!!!

It is a celebration of both the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the Around Long Island race in 1959 and of Don's 50th anniversary of winning his 2nd World Championship in 1969.

Yes, the gathering of Old Offshore Race boats.... have to be...Old Offshore Race boats. We hope to establish an annual event and want to create something people will want to come and see.

If you have an era specific offshore boat, but it never actually raced in any sanctioned offshore race at anytime, it can run with the modern boats.

271 miles is quite a trip. All boats will stop for lunch and all boats will have an opportunity to fuel up as needed. If you feel that your boat should not be on the open ocean after lunch, you can go back the way you came on Long Island Sound and meet the rest of the boats back at Manhasset Bay Marina later in the day.

I sure hope you get a lot of Old Offshore Race Boats. That would be incredible.
