What makes some motors louder then others?

Joe

Pushing the sticks forward!

LOL....actually he makes a point. I've got stock 7.4's in my Dominator. Sound nice enough at idle, but nothing exotic enough to really get your rocks off on...same thing at cruise speed. However when I finally got comfy enough with it to bury the sticks....that's when I found the sound I bought one of these boats for! :26: ....and immediately then thought...I bet I could make that sound better. :sifone:

Another way to think about it could also be the following theroum:

Sweet exhaust sound is inversely proportional to the amount of cash left in your bank account.

I think it's a right of passage that has to be earned by smaller motors that only engines understand, similar to animals. A smaller motor simply cannot produce the roar of the adult motor, and pride leader.....

ok..to try and simplify this, sound comes in waveforms, causing an oscilation of molecules, and is subject to harmonic distortion (the amplification and degradation of the wave form) as the wave moves thru a variety of molecules. QUOTE]

That's exactly what i was going to post word for word!!:)

Dry pipes make the most noise, compression motors with stiff valve springs and solid roller cams have the most bark. It's the same way at the drag strip, you hear a 14.5-1 motor free rev and it just snaps and crackles, you hear a 9.5-1 motor rev even with open headers and its just not the same,Smitty

lol b

Where's that youtube of your little guys?

Ever heard an old Winston Cup car fire up in an all metal building before? I was up at Baker Eng. last year and got a tour which included their collection of old Cup cars they use for parades, etc. The dude fired up a 1994 vintage Jeff Gordon Lumina and my ears promptly started to bleed!!! Those are some angry sounding motors outdoors let alone locked up in a Morton-style building!!
