Tennis Elbow

Any of you experience tennis elbow, I am pretty sure I have a good case of it(not from tennis though) I am putting off going to the doctor until after the new year, there is not much they seem to do for it initially anyway. My question is about support splints/braces. I don't know if I should get a strap type brace or a wider one. My pain is not really in the elbow, it runs along the top of the forearm in a slant. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

Had it - Got the adjustable "band" that wraps around the lower forearm and wore it while fishing and doing other things that irritated it - after a couple of months it's all but pretty much gone away. I still wear it when fishing as that can really make it sore after a couple of hours of casting.... but it's much better.

Ligaments and tendons dont have a very goo blood supply, thus they take a long time to heal. Once you see the Dr. you will probably end up fully resting it for a weel or so along with some antiinflammatorys, then begin a physical therapy regimine..

Get the strap that wraps around your arm. They typically have foam button type pad that you locate right over the tendons ahead of your elbow. Then take a bunch of Advil or other anti-infammatories. Heat up before activity; cool down (ice) after.

In therapy they can do some ultrasound treatment but it didn't work for me. Cortizone shots can also help with reducing the inflammation.

Donna...if you are injuring yourself, you are being counterproductive in your training.
If both of your arms are having problems you prolly should think about canning your trainer. The concept of working out is to increase strength, endurance and health. you know have decreased strength and injuries....

Working out to get in shape is killing me one limb at a time:cuss:

I hear you Donna. I've been trying to get back into shape for the 5-6 years. Every time that I get halfway there I have some sort of setback. Getting old sucks!!:cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss:

get a certified trainer Donna. Even if you don't use them ever time you work out at least work with one for a month or two to develop a plan that will be beneficial, not hurt you.

Work that plan for a while then start again and build a new routine.

It's funny, when we were talking about your boxing last week, that tennis elbow thing was the first thing that popped into my head. But I'm no doctor. Good luck!

when going to therapy for my shoulder I met several people that were there after getting hurt during workouts with personal trainers. Not that I am saying they are no good but I think you can obtain injuries regardless of working out alone or with a trainer. Most trainers are fairly agressive and work you pretty hard, if you work out a lot the tendency is to move up in weights or reps so something always seems to hurt or feel stiff. So the question is how do you know the differnce between plain old muscle fatigue and a full blown injury. I guess when it does not go away you figure there is a problem, but by then preventive advice (thank you very much) is to late. My gf is a Personal Trainer and she told me "I am always hurting myself at the gym, it doesn't take much". I hurt my shoulder (go figure)during yoga (probably from low push ups/ie chataranga pose which I was getting good at doing) or on one of the machines at the gym (probably cable cross over). I hurt the forearm during a boxing class. So in both instances I was under (sort of) trained supervision. At this point I will not be doing anymore upper body weights or boxing until I see if I can heal my tennis elbow, so good suggestions about working out at this point are to late, but if you have had experience with healing tennis elbow I would love to hear it.

Great advice. I have a buddy I train with and every 6 - 8 weeks we completely change up our workout routine. Right now we are doing circuit training which is an absolute arse kicker. My buddy is friends with a certified trainer and he consults with him regularly on what we are doing. I developed tendonitis in my right elbow last fall (from of all things raking leaves for 8 hours one Saturday) and his suggestions allowed me to continue to work out while also allowing the injury to recover. It did take several weeks for the elbow to get back to normal.

I had been training with a certified personal trainer in excess of 3 years when my elbow simply popped one day after cleaning boat canvas...I had the MRI and went thru therapy, had 2 cortizone shots and to this day it still acts up. I can usually deal with it using ice and Advil.

that's a shame, do you still work out, if so what are the exercises you were told to avoid

Here is what I use http://banditelbowbrace.com/

I got mine from my Chiropractor and it seems to be helping. I am in the lawn and landscape biz and chasing mowers and hand held equipment really takes its toll. Another Week or so I will be into my offseason and will probably go to the doctor for a cortizone shot as well.
