Under Biden, We Are Now Spending More On Debt Interest Than Defense
During the initial half of fiscal year 2024, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reported that the interest payments on the federal debt surpassed the expenditure on defense.
The net interest on the U.S. government's public debt amounted to an estimated $440 billion from October to March in fiscal year 2024.
This is compared to $308 billion during the same period in fiscal year 2023, marking a 43% increase according to the CBO.
The outlays for Medicare and Medicaid were both surpassed by interest payments, with expenditures amounting to $389 billion and $304 billion, respectively, according to the CBO.
