THERMALITO, Calif. – The 62nd annual APBA Region 9 Time Trials at Thermalito Afterbay saw history made Saturday as 18-year-old Jake McKee shattered the F45 kilo class world record.

McKee, racing in his boat “Jesse James” (No. 86), hit an average speed of 68.4 mph, obliterating the previous record of around 20 mph set by Ryan Gowin. The Redlands native was only the second boat in the water when he set the mark.

“Being able to have the title of world record definitely means something,” McKee said. “It’s not an easy thing to do. If they handed world records out to everyone, they wouldn’t mean as much as they do.”

McKee, who has been racing since 2019, comes from a family deeply rooted in motorsports. His father, John McKee, has raced for over 20 years and won the Parker Enduro Division One twice, a major achievement in boat racing.

“To see him come out and do well—that’s what we’re trying to achieve,” John said. “It’s definitely a proud moment for myself and our entire race team.”

The event, which had to pause briefly due to high winds, continues Sunday at 9 a.m., running until sundown or until all scheduled runs are completed.

For those looking to attend, the event is free, with spectators required to sign a waiver upon arrival.
