Phragle's official winter upgrade thread..

To make a long story short, the bottom problems I had last year that Dave patched up and were attributed to the old ill fitting trailer came back. So we decided to bomb proof it. Pulled the motor and ground out the bilge, not to thrilled with Avantis layup schedule. Standing in the bilge you can see the bottom flex.

So today I layed to layers of 18 oz in the bottom then made 4 mini stringers about 3 inches high and corebonded them in, they are kickin now. So there is now a stringer every 6 inches or so. Im going to cover them and the space between them with 3 layers of 1708 over lapping between the stringers. Using VE too.

So all together Im adding 8 layers of glass and 4 new stringers... should be bomb proof.

A little update.....

Why do you think it needs to be bomb proof? Going to Iraq?

You have seen how I run a boat...need I say more????

Iraq, no, back to Boyne, yes....

The bottom is hanging on great!

Still working on setup. finding the boat likes the drive neutral and the attitude set with the tabs. The lencos are protesting this method so I am looking for a set of 280's and some hydraulic steering. Also on the need to try list is a counter rotating 4 blade to try and take some of the torque lean out of it as Im using too much tab trying to keep it level horizontally. Last weekend I did discover that no matter what I do, it wont charge head on lake erie 4 footers when every 4th wave is a 6 footer.

And for the record, anybody who'd like to question Phragle's manhood because he turned around and had his mom pick him up....

He's a Nurse.:cheers2:

For some reason your prop rotation and engine rotation are the same direction? Standing behind the boat, the engine should be counter-clockwise and the prop clockwise (I think).....

Before you do that, check the centerline of the drive to the Vee. Are they perfectly in line?

Your boat should be set up so that you drive on the right, the batteries, sea-strainer, etc are on the left. The engine rotates counter-clockwise (when viewed from behind the boat), the drive rotates clockwise (same view).

The boat should accelerate and ride flat with just you in the boat.

If it was leaning to port with you and Dave in there, tell him to go on a diet!!:sifone:

Batteries are dead center directly in front of motors. The boat is very sensitive side to side wise to sea and to drive trim.nnIm usually dragging some port tab, Boat does have a small pad that I dont thing helps.

Check centerline of the drive.

Where's the gas tank? One in the middle under the floor?

It doesn't bother me that the boat is very susceptible to trim or cross seas. It's a 22' with a deep Vee trying to balance on a point. It does bother me that you have to drag the port tab when the boat is running normal at speed.

Is there any chance something is dragging from the boat on the port side that is not on the starboard side? Even a small, 1/4" deep by 6" small recess on one side that is not on the other, or a small hook at the transom, etc can make a huge drag on one side that is not on the other.

We shall investigate thebottom more after the season. Right no Im using it, thogh small changes seem to make big differences

Go phragle, your quote tells me you are running your boat well. I like your conclusions as well. I too like a left hand on a single engine. I think it does help it to fly straight. K planes will definitely be worth every penny and your effort. Keep them high and wide. Do not mount them like the fountains and the copy cats. My personal opinion is to split the difference of conventional and flat. Thats how Velocity used to mount them. As far as the occasional 6 footers go. It is important to know your limitations. Having said that, Ever hear the expression over 2 thru one? Dont try to go over the big ones. Stick the bow right it to it near the top. { provided your deck is glassed and thru bolted on }.

Its a lot harder to run a single engine boat well than any twin. Keep on keepin on.
Enjoy Cheers!
