Personal Boating Disasters

Mild hurricane that packed a huge storm surge. Jordan Point in VA....100 miles inland (this is the marina Jammin on the James starts at). Most of the boats were put on shore...others left in slips. It didn't matter, every boat in the marina was destroyed!

I just got my Scarab Panther.... It was late season, October timeframe, running the Ocean from Sandy Hook down to Pt. Pleasant Inlet for a little lunch.

Pull in the inlet and come off plane, my girlfiend at the time needed a tissue so she opens the cabin door. Opens the door and there's about 1 ft of water in the cabin and rising fast...

Make a quick decision to 1) beach the boat so we don't sink; 2) try and get to the nearest marina to get hauled out. Dee picks up a bucket and starts bailing water and we decide we can make it to the marina... Get to the marina and it's closed...go to the marina next door and luckilly they had a guy who could run the lift...

Pulll the boat out of the water and all the spectators are saying "Holy chit" and "DAMNNNNN"..... Turns out a 7 ft. section of the keel delaminated and cracked 4 inches from teh center of the keel...

Fast foward two months later... The fiberglass shop cut a 7 ft. section out of the bottom, glassed it back in and added a center stringer and a bunch of lateral stringers and it was good as new... While the boat was in the shop I decided to blue-print the bottom and by the time was all said and done I picked up 2-3 mph. :sifone:

Running up the East River for the Brunch Run and my drive decides to check out.... No big deal...we idle to the nearest marina so I can go home and get the trailer....

My buddy who took the trip offers to drive me back to NJ on the boat to save time and save my wife from having to come pick me up, drive home and get the trailer/truck, and back up to get the boat.....

So we decide to hop on my buddys boat... Half way home and half way between the Verrazanno Bridge and Sandy Hook, someone opens the cabin door and see about 2 ft of water down below...

We slow down and I figured I'd be swimming and we would be calling in a mayday.... Bildge pumps are keeping up with it so we limp back home and make it... Get the boat on the trailer and there's a 3-4' long crack on the stbd side that's gushing water out... Turn's out the Husler also delaminated... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KG0DBLKPORk

Oh yeah... forgot to add that on this same day... The Nortech we were running with blew a 700sci about 5 minutes up river from where my drive blew up... AND... one of the OuterLimits we were running with blew a power steering hose and lost steering at 60-70' mph.. What a day!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5JoPpO12Iw

This was Fathers Day 92. We were enjoying the day and we heard a loud pop and a cloud of smoke. Then a fire breaks out and the guy screams. He untied the boat, got off and pushed the boat free from the dock ......just befor the gas tank blew up. Scared the crapp out of you even when your waiting for it.:biggrinjester:

The heat that thing put out was ....scorching even as far away as we were. The owner had a burnt face and forearms, but was ok.
