About a year ago I post this thread http://seriousoffshore.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6330 asking for opinions on a dog for our family. Everyone was nice enough to give input on what I was interested in and we had our normal "man's best friend" discussion on why each breed was better than the next.
Fast forward a year later to now...
In June of last year I finally came across the right situation for acquiring a family pet for us. In short, we were the proud owners of an 8 week old male basset hound puppy. His appointed name would be "Cletus". We felt it a very fitting name for a fine canine with his bloodlines.
The last 10 months have been eventful and memorable to say the least. For the first 6 months I thought this damn dog was never gonna get house trained. Beautiful, lovable, playful, but stubborn as hell. Mix this in with the fact that we had just moved in to our new home we spent almost 2 years building and you can see the reason for my stress where this dog was concerned.
Since Cletus and I came to an understanding on the acceptable places for him to relieve himself all has been dog owning bliss for us. My reasons for wanting this breed have come to confirm themselves. He is a low key dog that has no problem napping and laying low around the house. At first he literally had the ability to sleep 20 hours a day. When it's time to play he can keeps the kids and myself entertained with laughter until we can't stand it.
This breed has proven to be smarter than what some would indicate. He is almost too smart sometimes. I think the common misconception is the simple fact that they are stubborn. Just because they know what to do doesn't mean it's going to happen. There are times when it's all he can do to get enough energy to climb up on the couch for a nap, then an hour later he's got enough energy to jump over the couch chasing a ball. They are night and day rolled into one.
I could go on forever about our new buddy but it would bore you to death. Here's some pics of him over the last few months.
First pic is just a couple days after he came home with us.

Second pic...a normal nap time for the pup.

Third, starting to grow up. Last fall playing in the woods with the kids and I.
