Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to formally introduce "Cletus".

About a year ago I post this thread http://seriousoffshore.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6330 asking for opinions on a dog for our family. Everyone was nice enough to give input on what I was interested in and we had our normal "man's best friend" discussion on why each breed was better than the next.

Fast forward a year later to now...

In June of last year I finally came across the right situation for acquiring a family pet for us. In short, we were the proud owners of an 8 week old male basset hound puppy. His appointed name would be "Cletus". We felt it a very fitting name for a fine canine with his bloodlines.

The last 10 months have been eventful and memorable to say the least. For the first 6 months I thought this damn dog was never gonna get house trained. Beautiful, lovable, playful, but stubborn as hell. Mix this in with the fact that we had just moved in to our new home we spent almost 2 years building and you can see the reason for my stress where this dog was concerned.

Since Cletus and I came to an understanding on the acceptable places for him to relieve himself all has been dog owning bliss for us. My reasons for wanting this breed have come to confirm themselves. He is a low key dog that has no problem napping and laying low around the house. At first he literally had the ability to sleep 20 hours a day. When it's time to play he can keeps the kids and myself entertained with laughter until we can't stand it.

This breed has proven to be smarter than what some would indicate. He is almost too smart sometimes. I think the common misconception is the simple fact that they are stubborn. Just because they know what to do doesn't mean it's going to happen. There are times when it's all he can do to get enough energy to climb up on the couch for a nap, then an hour later he's got enough energy to jump over the couch chasing a ball. They are night and day rolled into one.

I could go on forever about our new buddy but it would bore you to death. Here's some pics of him over the last few months.

First pic is just a couple days after he came home with us.

Second pic...a normal nap time for the pup.

Third, starting to grow up. Last fall playing in the woods with the kids and I.

A couple more...

Climbing a fallen tree with the girls. Yes, they can actually climb.

Spring break in Texas on hunting lease. Keeping the kids entertained.

Just being a hound.

One of his favorite pastimes. In fact, I'd say he's darn good at this.

Nice,

We considered a Bassett, but we were determined to rescue a dog from the shelter, and when we showed up, no bassett's, but fell in love with Harry.

I commend you for doing that. I looked at the shelter multiple times for a breed that would work for us. I really felt compelled to do it if possible. Again, my hat's off to you.

Looks like you got a winner on your hands.

Hounds!
What a Blast they are, personalities.......
I have a Plott, that is quite a great dog and a handful.
The bark is what wins
Bassets are really cool dogs! A neighbor has one and they are like opposites.
She is Long legged and streamlined, he is Short and Stout!

We werent really set on a breed, but I have always thought Basset's were cool. As a kid I liked huskies, but we grew up with pound puppies, and once had a husky/poodle mix, that was a strange one:eek: Absolutely didnt plan on finding such a nice Husky mix walking in the shelter that day, especially not in South Florida, and was kinda leaning towards a smaller dog, but one with little maintenance. Fell in love with this guy, and the best part is that my wifes best friend who just happened to be in the same place at the same time has his brother, here is a few pics of them playing together at our local dog park. Harry was very easy to housebreak as far as wetting goes, but still likes to chew, we just make sure he has enough toys to chew that he doesnt even think about the sofa. This morning on my way out the door, I went to pet him with my lunch bag in hand, and the little fugger went for the napkin that my bagel was wrapped in from the side pocket of the bag, he really only wanted the napkin to chew on, and got a surprise when the whole deal hit the floor, he got half, I picked up the other half and went off to work:sifone:

HiZ, I can honestly say I've never seen that breed before. I like the coloring.

rchevelle, I like the pics of them playing together. Too cool.

I've been around German Shepherds the most of any breed, Mom has had a couple of different mutts as her lap dog growing up, my buddy had a Great Dane when we were kids. I can honestly say of all the breeds I've been around I don't think one of them can hang with a Basset when it comes to farting. This 50 lb dog can clear the entire main floor of my house in a matter of seconds on a very consistent basis. Just blows my mind what his body is able to pass through it for an odor.

On another note, I never thought I'd be so happy about a dog learning to drink from the toilet. Makes life so much easier when they can just get a drink whenever they want and I don't have to worry about their water supply.
