If you like an event that not only is loud but vibrates your seat, you have drag boat racing. And if you take a vehicle without wheels and put a top fuel dragster engine in it, put it in the water and drive it 260-plus miles per hour you have the fourth annual John Haas Memorial race.
Several divisions will run through elimination’s on Friday, June 12, with the finals on Saturday, June 13. The gates open for the elimination series at 9 a.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday for the finals.
Lake Lucas is the only man-made lake in the world built for the purpose of drag boat racing. The lake is 4,000 feet long, 400 feet wide and eight feet deep. It has covered seating to accommodate a large crowd with camping available at the site.
Lots of vendors with items of interest to racing fans are also scheduled to be at the race.
Another treat will be that all drag boat ticket holders on Saturday will be able to walk over from Lake Lucas to the dirt track and view the Budweiser Weekly Series for free.
Its Kids Night at the races on the dirt track as the stock car drivers gear up for mid-season competition in contested races to accumulate points for the yearly championship.
Upcoming events to watch for are the Bob Westphal Memorial Cup race on Saturday, June 27. This race will present one of two times the ASCS wing sprint cars and WAR sprints will appear at Lucas Speedway in Wheatland in 2015.
Top sprint car drivers are expected such as Johnny Herrera, Jeff Swindel and Tony Bruce, Jr.
The next weekend, Saturday, June 27, the Lucas Oil Speedway will present the Bolivar Herald-Free Press Mid-Season Championship races. This weekly series event will feature the top stock car drivers in the area competing for points in the yearly standings. Discount coupons will be available that week in the BH-FP.
