Funds Brave restore thread

Nice!

Do you already have the dash put together, or did you change anything on it for the first season? New interior?

It sounds like you have the power all figured out & ready to be bolted down. Are you thinking of painting the boat white, then doing vinyl?

Sorry for all of the questions, it's just cool to see someone redoing a 28 Brave. I've always thought they have the best all around original/natural platform to make upgrades go the farthest, of any of the 28's in their class
I actually took over a restoration that was started in 2008. The prior owner was WMF. He had the Gail Paik paint scheme touched up and all the little battle scars repaired, as well as a bad corner of the fairing. He also did some cockpit re-do, like the dash/helm. He did new guages, and had the wiring straightened out. He also did a loncoin floor over the bad tank, so that got cut. :o The interior is original. I bought it with two pooched engines and a milkshake bilge but complete. The tank was a surprise that revealed itself when I was prepping the bilge for paint. I ended up cutting the old tank out with a grinding wheel and having one made slightly smaller to fit so that I didn't have to cut the liner. (Went from 135 to 127) Had the new tank made with extra baffles and return line fittings, just in case. I'm keeping the Gail Paik paint, because in person it looks really good. There are a couple of things that I want to do (new hatch, etc) but I am waiting for it to run first. I guess if I had to do a breakdown of the project, WMF did the cosmetics and I did the mechanical. The vinyl comment that you saw was about graphics on the flame arrestors.

Ahh, gotcha. I thought the paint looked good too. You're definitely thinking the right way by keeping some money in the bank until it running...and running well.

March is almost halfway over already as I'm SURE you see everyday. Post some pictures as you get back into it!

My checkbook just bled out this morning from "mightaswellitis." :D

Might as well do new couplers. Might as well do oil coolers. Might as well do new hoses. Might as well do new fuel lines. Might as well do new impellers. Might as well do new shift cables. Might as well.... :leaving:

That's a true statement when you're rebuilding one, and especially if you're trying to do a first class job...... you might as well :sifone:

Doing a half assed job will only cost you more money down the road.... so I don't think, "just because you can, doesn't mean you should..." applies in this scenario :cheers2:

Unless your starters are top-mount ones, you might as well replace them as well!!! ;):sifone:

Looks like its coming along pretty good. We don't have cold summers, but we do have summers that get too hot to work in. Pretty easy to fall out doing this stuff in 105 degree heat.

I saw that your boat didn't have any drain holes on the floor. Mine has two under the back seat corners to the port and starboard of the fuel tank. There should be drainage pipes that allow the water to flow through the bulkhead to the bilge. Just an idea. IMO it could help stop water from driping over the gas tank, but I doubt your worried about that now. Better to control the water then to let it find someplace where you don't want it.

When you boat in Ohio and primarily on Lake Erie, you're only starting with 12 good summer weekends anyway. Figure on a few of them it'll be raining and a few more it'll be sunny and breezy and you'll have 12's coming over the breakwall. Now toss out a couple more where your non-boating life precludes you from making it to the lake (and that never happens on a rainy one). When it's all said and done, you've got 5 or 6 chnces to get out and have a good time. Losing even one of those to a boat that won't run is simply not worth taking chances.

I've always referred to it as "mightaswellonoma".
I'm afflicted with it also.
