Chicago: A world class Olympic city?...

Unemployment at 25 year highs, 4 more service men died yesterday and this is his best use of his time? Jimmy Carter must be happy that he is about to be replaced as the worst ever.

Apparently he met with the commander of the armed forces Afghanistan while he was in Denmark so it wasn't just a sales trip.

I still think that the economic benefit of the Olympics were worth a day of the Presidents time.

I cant find anything that confirmed us as a semifinalist prior to yesterdays selection. Rio has been a favorite for some time.

I also don't understand all this whining about the cost. He is the President of the United States whether you agree with his politics or not. As long as he is on company business he should travel in the style befitting.

I agree with you in regard to economic development and the value of the Chicago bid.

I think that those "whining" about the cost feel that it was a wasted effort, and that the Chicago team overestimated their power over the IOC. Obviously the IOC was unimpressed, and in the end... it probably would have given them to Rio no matter what. After all, this is the first South American Olympics. And it was Rio's third attempt.

Tokyo and Chicago could have stayed home and saved the money. I think that's where the folks who would have rather not spent the money are coming from. Plus, it was an unprecedented move. So that always makes people think about it a bit more. And when you toss Oprah into the mix as a "Non Governmental Organization," things just get stranger.

But it could have been a nice boost to the economy, depending on over-runs. I remember how the Olympics changed Salt Lake for the better.

It's been pretty much everywhere you look. The only reason he went last minute, when he said he wouldn't because there was more important things for him to do, is because all the insiders had them pegged as first and he thought it would be another "Saviour" moment. Current leaks have him as ruining it because of his arrogance....

More will leak I'm sure.

Chicago favorite for 2016 Olympics:
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Chicago is currently the front-runner city in the competition to host the 2016 Olympic Games, the Chicago Tribune reported Sunday.

'It's Chicago's to lose.'

Anonymous member of International Olympics Committee, as quoted by Chicago Tribune

"It's Chicago's to lose," the Tribune quoted a member of the IOC as saying. "If they don't muck it up, they should win."

Finalists for the 2016 Games include Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo.

Or,

If the oddsmakers of the world are to be believed, the Olympic flame will be rising above Chicago for the Summer Games in 2016. Chicago is the favorite, and oddsmakers currently rate it at 4-5 — meaning it has a bit better than 50/50 chance of winning the Games. Rio de Janeiro is the 2-1 second choice, while Madrid and Tokyo are the outsiders for now, at odds ranging from 7-1 to 12-1, depending on the bookmaker.

He met with him for a few min, more of a photo op if you ask me. I am sure that they had plenty of time to talk about the complex issues of the armed forces in that short period of time.

The last Olypics that made money was probably Salt Lake City. Since them most countrys have lost millions on the it with buildings staying unused after the games leave.

The president could have just sent his wife, or could have flown out with his wife on one plane, or she could have flown out on a G5...... This is the man/party that was chastising the CEO's of banks and automakers for flying in jets becasue they were asking for a bailout. Well last I checked this country is getting a bailout and what I am looking for is for the gov. to start cutting back on waiste. It was a waiste for Obama to go to Denmark and send his wife out earlier.

He had to meet with him. He just got slammed for not even talking to him except once in seven months......

This makes twice, carry on:sifone: .....

Rush was saying today that Montreal just paid off the 76 Olympics THIS YEAR!

Ah yes...and London is already over the $12 billion it projected the games to cost. Currently, it is $14 billion, and there are some reports saying it could go as high as $40 billion. The winter games in Whistler are also far overbudget...so much so that the whole works had to be recontracted recently.

Add this into the already bereft Chicago economy (excuse my cynicism...it happens when you grow up in Cook County...but do you REALLY think the "common man" about town would have reaped the benefits of Olympics-related contracts????...REALLY?) and you have the potential for the SECOND state in the country to collapse. California will likely narrowly beat Illinois to that illustrious honor.

It was somewhat odd that more Chicagoans did not want the Olympics than those that did. It was very close in the polls though.

anyone remember the California riots some years back when the truck driver was dragged out of his cab and beat to death on national TV? I believe we had a few presidents from that state as well.....

Reginald Denny was injured very severely and never regained his full ability to walk. He underwent extensive surgery, and as recently as 2007 he was working as a marine mechanic in Lake Havasu.
He is not dead.

Richard Nixon was the only US President born in California.

Ronald Reagan was born in Illinois.

The Chicago version of you is soooo pizzed... I can't imagine how cynical you would have been as a Detroiter. :) :leaving:

Mike is not ****ed he is just analyzing the situation how he sees it! As a writer he has a way with words. Keep in mind Mike lives in Crook county and pays the outlandish taxes that goes along with living there! Mike is a smart guy I for one listen to what he has to say!

I'm not from Chicago and couldn't stand the weather, but I will say that I applaud the Presidents efforts in what was apparently a long shot.

I would like to see our president focusing on issues of a more "presidential" nature. We elected a president of our country, not of our Chamber of Commerce.

This was Carter's downfall- involved in everything, accomplishing nothing. This is why we have a Cabinet full of secretaries that run the various goverment agencies. Those agencies are staffed with career professionals who know how to make this sort of stuff happen.

I think this latest action by Obama opens a window into this man's thought process. I think he truly believes he has some magical power- he believes he can accomplish things with his megawatt smile and his charisma. He must believe his mere presence is enough to convince people to follow his desires.

It just came to me- he's the Un-Reagan. Instead of an actor and a celebrity becoming a politician, we have a guy that's a politician that wants to become a celebrity.

The SNL spoof about Obama getting involved with everything, and accomplishing nothing, was a classic...:sifone:

Even made MSNBC's headlines.....

My perception was based on his words. :)

If he analyzed the situation in Detroit the same way, he would be even more emphatic in his literary response to the quite obvious frustrations. :D

He is lucky to have a representative like you. Happy Belated Birthday, btw.
