An Artie Lange update. The Hoboken Police confirmed and the Associated Press reported that Howard Stern Show sidekick Artie Lange tried to commit suicide using a 13-inch Wolfgang Puck kitchen knife. Artie Lange was found by his mother unconscious but breathing last Saturday. Lange stabbed himself 9 times, six of them described as hesitation wounds and the final three complete stabs.
What is so troubling about the news of Artie Lange's suicide attempt is that he told the New York Post he had so much to live for and made statements that generally signaled he was on the upswing in life in an interview posted October 30, 2009.

He obviously wasn't ready to "deal" with his problems.
Days following the incident a lot of the regular callers were trying to figure out why he did what he did. Howard was saying how you can't try to analyze why he did what he did because none of us normal people understand how his brain works. And the rest of the world just thinks it was a political stunt..... I think you're better off focusing that energy on our current administration.
I was chatting with a co-worker who's 15 yrs clean... I was telling him how my doctor prescribed cough syrup with Codine and how I hate taking the stuff.. He started telling me that back in the day it was more like; if the bottle says 2 teaspoons are what you should take then 4 must be better and after you take 4, 8 must be even better than that.... I said to him; I don't get it.... Yeah the Codine makes me relaxed and helps me sleep but I'd never take swigs of it to get high... His response was, that's cause your normal and not an addict...
It's a sad situation for the guy... I feel bad for him but I feel no remorse... I think we all choose our own paths...:USA:

Thats usually what happens when people get into a "manic" state. They go through huge emotionally swings. I'll bet money Artie is severe bipolar and was using extreme amounts of booze and drugs to self-medicate. That makes the swings even more dramatic until he finally reached an uncontrollable high or low

I agree Bill!!! In my early 20's I was dating a bi-polar chick who was self medicating... She went to rehab and then was on medication after that and after 2.5 years I lost the stamina to stay on top of the highs/lows and we eventually had to break up.... Crazy chit...:willy_nilly:
However, she was excellent in the sack!!!

I've been a Stern fan for 14 years and I like Artie, and just like all the mental and drug problems with K C, I don't think he'll be coming back to the show, it's a big loss. I wonder if they're going to fill the seat again...

Howard wouldn't fire anyone simply because he would be scared if they hurt/killed themselves due to his action in firing them. That is why they "put up with" Artie and his nonsense.
One guy who mentioned he wanted the job but surely won't get it is Jackie. Fred is/was determined to never let that happen, he despises Jackie's arrogance. Benjy is whacky but no where near funny enough to take that seat.
The show has 7-8 months left on Howard's contract so even if they take a short-timer they will be able to coast through the end of the current deal.
I suspect though that Howard wouldn't be able to take retirement due to boredom, then his wife will be pressuring him to have a kid and that will totally stress him out with no avenue to release that stress/pressure.
My prediction: Howard will re-sign for less money albeit less work either through a shorter show, less days per week or more vacation time.
