.458 Socom

Definitely a better choice then the Beowulf. Another in a long line of orphan calibers in my collection.

the 458 is a cool caliber to shoot, but get a brass bag- the brass is pricey.

I'm telling you, in 338 Lapua, you can do better. The Sako barrel isn't that great. And the twist is wrong for 350gr bullets. Nowhere near a Rock 5R. Build a custom gun yourself.

Thats probably what I will end up doing, for the kind of coin to have wrapped up in a complete turn key TRG its still a production gun. Ive got 2 boat projects, 3 gun projects, and an unfinished house to contend with if I start another project Donzi will shoot me.

Having said all that, what would you reccomend for a recc. for a starting point? Block of steel and CNC mill??:D

Depends on budget. I built one for my brother on the Remington 700 long magnum action. Rock 5R in a Mac stock. It shoots 0.6MOA at 800m. warm barrel. You can pick up a complete 700 in 338 for a bit over a grand and it's not a bad rifle. If you blueprinted the bolt, squared the lug and rechambered it, you could get it shooting well under 1MOA. Maybe 3/4ths.

On the other end, you can spend $2K on a bare action- and get to .5 or .4 MOA. Two factors- do you want to spend the $3K on glass to support that kind of accuracy and do you have the ability to shoot .4MOA? I no longer do.

Ditto. No personal experience but have yet to find someone with a TRG that loves it. Everyone I've talked to said they would go for a custom built on a 700 next time around.
