Hurricane Andrew was heading to South Florida. Tourists were ordered out of the Keys and the state parks were closed. No evacuation was ordered for the Keys.



A federal judge in North Carolina sentenced former Monroe County State Attorney Jeff Gautier Jr. to two months in prison and fined him $2,500 for money laundering.

Hurricane Andrew slammed into south Dade County and Key Largo, causing heavy damage in Dade County.



Though Key West and most of the Keys escaped the ravages of Hurricane Andrew, the electrical tieline to the mainland was knocked out, leaving the Keys with rotating blackouts.

Hurricane Andrew had knocked out both cell and land communications in the Keys. By Monday night, some local service was available, but lines to the mainland were still down.



Mainland police lifted the roadblock to the South Florida areas hit by Hurricane Andrew to allow traffic back to the Keys, even though they were concerned that looters would enter the damaged towns.

The Keys, for the most part, remained unscathed by Hurricane Andrew, except for the Ocean Reef Club on Upper Key Largo, which suffered considerable damage.

Southern Bell Telephone Co. had crews repairing local lines but said long-distance service would be out approximately one week.

Keys businesses were fighting to get the tourists to return despite the shortage of water and electricity. With roadblocks and bad publicity, no one was coming to the Keys.

Rescue officials estimated that 180,000 were homeless in South Florida because of Hurricane Andrew.

About 20 members of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and four members of the Key West Police Department were assisting South Dade police in restoring order.
 
Officials expected the unemployment to double due to the lack of tourism brought on by Hurricane Andrew.

Several Old Town streets were closed while crews filmed the television series "Key West.

A local man tried to sell crack cocaine to a Key West bicycle police officer in full uniform.
 
The Navy hydrofoil USS Taurus stopped a 30-foot lobster boat with 1,700 pound of cocaine that had been dropped from a plane.

When fishermen returned from the Hemingway marlin tournament in Cuba, they were greeted by agents from the Treasury Department.

Federal authorities seized trophies won by fishermen who took part in the Hemingway marlin tournament in Cuba.

The U.S. government returned fishing trophies to the man who had won them in Cuba but were taken by the U.S. Custom Service when he returned to Key West.
