103 in an svl ?

I would start with mandating a simple data logger. We run one. We log speed, rpm G force, satelite based time, location on course (+- aprox 15 meters) 40 times per second. This is simple and inexpensive.

Steve

Yes, add a torque sensor and smart craft data like rpm, tpi%, ect. Inspect for final drive ratio and prop size and wala.. Hull and/or setup efficiency can be determined.. The hull efficiency value is what has been missing to make the boats truly even.

How fast do the older SVL run 91, 92, 93?? Just put a GPS in the fountain and regulate his speed to that of the older boats.

Rick , their are many ways ,to have and make close and competitive racing,,,that would take cooperation ,,and the willingness t o want competitive racing ,,and that is not in the cards right now,,,,,,they don,t even want us to work on our 12 year old boats,,,what does that tell ya.. whats the big accomplishment in taking a biggest , best , newest boat and racing against 12 year old boats ,,and DEMANDING THEY DON,T WORK ON THEM,??? IT,S A JOKE ..

SO HEARS TO YOU MISTER BUD # 1 FOAM FINGER I,M THE BEST BOAT RACER AWARD WINNER :seeya:

The torque sensor will tell the story of the engine. What do you do when the hp level is not quite what you were told it was? Lets say the engine makes only 480 hp and you have it weighted down to be 580 hp to weight, is that fair in the spec world?

Sorry Pat,

Offshore grew from 1997 to 2003 but has steadily declined since.

The tracks were removed starting in 1997 and the direction and fate was locked in, here and in Europe.

Steve,

They lock in a thing called a Concord Agreement so the rules are stable for three years then they make changes. See what is coming for F1.

F1 teams are close to agreeing upon a new engine formula for the six-year period beginning in 2013.

Until then, development of the current 2.4 litre V8s will remain 'frozen', to be replaced thereafter by similarly powerful engines that use less fuel, emit less pollution and are affordable for the small teams.

Spain's El Mundo Deportivo newspaper said an in-principle agreement has been reached for a four cylinder, 1.5 litre engine equipped with a twin-turbo and direct injection.

The new formula would reportedly also involve KERS.

"If F1 has to develop something helpful for real (road) driving conditions, then the best solution is for an engine that is turbocharged and GDI (gasoline direct injection," Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa told Autocar magazine at the Beijing Motor Show.

"That is what we would support," he said.

Mercedes' Norbert Haug agrees that smaller engines are likely for reasons of consumption and emissions, but warns that high technology needs to remain a crucial focus.

"If you fly from Europe to Japan on a 747, you would use more fuel than an entire F1 season. We need to see the whole picture," he insisted.

This is what I mean about progressive. Time to dump the big block....

Food for thought on the future of boat racing.

Someday they will stop drinkin Koolaid and sober up.

Hey Pat, you've done a lot of testing.

Will a slipping strain gauge work????? All boats in class have them. They are all tested and set at XXX Ft lbs force.

The most efficient setup gets the largest penalty, but thats bragging rights to sell your hull etc..

Any thoughts?

steve could you tell us more about your data logger ?

who's make, how it's hooked up and costs?

We use racepak now and really like it. It is very inexpensive and easy to use. I have had also several custom made units through the years including a very cool one GM developed. We got it wet and the GM proving grounds took me off their mailing list!

The racepak is very cool. I have prop slip live on my display. Tim is really good with tech support and around $1000.00 gets you going. I added a thermistor and air depression sensor in the bilge also.

We started with a G2x and went IQ3 when it came out. They are the same units just the displays differ.

The hook up is simple
12 volts
Tach line
GPS antennae (included)

With this you can get

Speed
RPM
Prop slip
volts
location lat/long
G force
logger temp
live lap analysis
optional transmit to shore live

:iagree:
I would like to see all our boats have them ,,and at the end of every race we turn them in to a class inspector ,,,:iagree:

Sign me up for that inspector job. I am fairly familiar with the Racepak, G2X. If one wanted to spend some money on it you can add in linear actuator senders, and TPS etc. can be a real cool tool for someone on their boat. You can see after the fact right where your tabs drive and throttle was etc. at any one point along the course, and map it all out. It also has the ability to Overlay on Video, like you see in some auto race footage on television. Would make a really cool marketing tool to the class. Everyone loves to see where and when one is on and off the throttle, just like on some Auto Race TV you can see when under acceleration and on the brakes etc.

Oh and if you do it right the Racepak will Count Laps for you !!. For those of you who seem to have sticky fingers with the whole tape strip idea. Just a tidbit.

And you can compare different lines through a turn, to see which was shortest on time, or fastest on speed, etc. Sorry, just another tidbit. ---Over---

i,m sure i,ll have that for next year ,, that all sounds like some info that would be very helpful .,,,,WERE ALL NOT SUPERSTARS,!!! WHAT A JOKE !!!

Yep! The only problem is that you need to run the course ahead of time to put in the Start/Finish or do it on the fly. Tim and crew made the raceboat config have a much more liberal area for the S/F which helps.

I have not got one yet but they are now offering a camera and it is made to work with the trackvision overlay software. This is a bunch of data on the cheap!

Yeah, either on the fly or on the fly of the pace lap if it works out. As many times as i have seen people screw up tape in my short career, it would probably pay for itself from one mistake. J
