Heading North this Summer for a week....thinking about renting a car for 9 days and driving....cheaper than flying ( I just do not fit into little airplane seats) If I get another Ford Focus (or its Chevy equivalent ) I should average about 33 MPG...plus I can bounce around and visit some peeps...I can get a car for around $340 Plus taxes and insurance ...seems like a good way to go...plus no one will trash my Golf clubs and rifle through my unmentionables ....Downsides ???

And it's about 1600 miles one way or 2800 round trip:huh::p

Check with Pete on his trip north, west, south, and back......

I think he was gone longer than a week though.....

I can't think of any downsides. I like going to Las Vegas and Los Angeles, when I do go usually chose car. Both are 18hr drives, but Id rather be in the car that long vs 2hrs on an airplane. I don't like going through customs at the airport or security. Car can stop for breaks, overall its just better then flying.

I think my drive limit is 20hrs or less over that fly. Driving to LA has some good places to stop, Rolling Hills Casino in Corning CA has a surprisingly good all you can eat buffet.

Plane tickets were $814 not including a bag....golf clubs...and a carry on ...getting charged both legs of the flight....I can drive about 14 hours...take a two hour nap and drive another 12 no problem...but I can stop in most states and say hullo to some old KW Friends !

I can't. I can drive the 14, but I need like 6 of nappie.
My record combined riding driving was Toledo to Maryland to Toledo. 23 hours. No sleep, quick stops. Some riding with buddy towing boat, and some driving the car on first and last legs. The buddy must have done 18 hours easily. As a favor. He loved the sport.

It was 07 for me up until this last Feb when I went out to Phoenix.
Extra expensive because I don't fit in coach.

BUT I got three free bags, including my clubs.

Flew to Vegas about a year ago, maybe two. We usually get good deals on flights, hotels and rental cars in Vegas from here. Its close by air. Think the flight was $200 return and hotel (Mandalay Bay) was $68 per night. Tipped the check in girl $100 with my brother, she gave upgraded us to individual suites in The Hotel. Chrysler 300 rental car was another $30 per day. This was two people so not a bad deal.

If I don't drink any Beer for the next twenty three days(starting Monday of course) it will save me $ 345 dollars...which will cover my rental car....the question is.....can it be done (insert dramatic music here) and I should drop a quick 7-10 lbs !

Check with your present insurance agent, most auto policys already cover rentals

Now days a 2 hour flight can take 12 or more hours with delays and cancelations, the airline co.s don't care about us any more. I hate being treated the way they treat the public.

So, $15 a day on beer.
Sounds about right.

Just me, but I'd keep drinking beer.

The drinkin is the cheap part....if I go up there for 7 days...that's a sh*tload of time off of work ...figure $200-300 a day I'm missing out on....plus spending a $100 a day.....but I do like to drive...and I haven't seen some of these folks for about 5 years...plus I can go up and see my Sister in Maine.....maybe catch a Red Sox Game in Boston (comped seats)...stop in on the way up and slap PENGY around a bit:eek:...maybe on the way back too!:smash:...

In the Vancouver airport we have US Customs, so all flights to the USA you have customs and airport security to go through. Takes about an hour and half to do both plus the check in. Its about 4hrs in the airport and another 2hrs in the air for LA. That's average not counting delays. I could be Vancouver to Portland Oregon by that time. Sure its faster and in most cases cheaper to fly. I find driving much more relaxing even at 20hrs drive time.
