The final report on attorney Fred Butner said he leaped to his death from the La Concha Hotel because he was being investigated for ripping off clients and he wanted to frame his former secretary for his "murder" because she had turned him in to the state.

As one of his last official acts, retiring U.S. Rep. Dante Fascell announced the creation of Dry Tortugas National Park in a ceremony at Fort Jefferson.

The Key West City Commission created the Mayor's Advisory Committee for Fantasy Fest to deal with the problems of nudity and lewd activities.

Capt. Tony Tarracino gave up drinking, but not gambling and smoking, though, to be a good example, he did quit for the local one-day "smokeout."

Key West was building new boat slips in Garrison Bight for Houseboat Row residents, who said they were not moving from South Roosevelt.

A woman admitted to stealing 24 shower curtains from the La Concha Town House Motor Inn. She was a former employee of the hotel.

The Navy was selling the old homes on the seaplane base and moving them for a modest price, but they had to be changed to meet the Key West code.

President Kennedy announced the blockade of Cuba was over, and the ships from it sailed for home.

A Key West landlord was arrested for locking two tenants behind a 5-foot chain-link fence and securing the gate to keep them out of their house.

Vice President-elect Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, landed at Key West International Airport and then drove to Little Palm Island for a vacation.

U.S. Border Patrol and Customs arrested 13 men in Marathon and charged them with "conspiracy to violate U.S. neutrality and trying to form an expedition to invade a foreign country." The men had been training on No Name Key.
