Hey Mark, how ya been? Any progress on the boat? Much like you, I rarely bother getting into political discussions on forums or with family and friends. The way I look at it is that rarely will you ever get the other side to see it your way no matter which side your on. Your first post in this thread was pretty moving, REAL firefighters have always separated the men from the boys. Unfortunately around here all we have are the volunteer kids/adult "water sprayers" that you refer to. My close cousin is a public teacher in one of the worst "ghetto" school districts in the Mansfield area. You couldnt pay me enough to do her job. Whe have been squabbling over S.B. 5 for a while. Without re typing the whole thing over, I'm going to copy and paste my response to here on a facebook thread so you can sort of get an idea as to why many non union people are in support of it. I want to make it firm that this is not an attack on anyone elses beliefs or thought process but instead a fairly accurate representation of how many other view the subject.

The union employ...ees that twist and bend the rules to get every last ounce of personal enjoyment and gain out of their job absolutly ****ing disgust me. Theese are usually the same guys who brag about napping on the job in a running air conditioned truck, use company/public resources(tax dollars) as their own, are the first to talk about a strike or grivance the very seccond the boss asks them to do something that isnt in their contract. They use phrases like "I'm entitled to" and "I deserve"

The rest of the non union workforce understands that if you want a raise or increased compensation of any sort beyond the standard cost of living, you have to do something besides going on strike to earn it.

I know damned well that you arent one of theese people, unfortunately there are way too many unionized public employees who are. Unfortunately for you, many of your own have painted a bad image to the non unionized workforce. The guy slinging asphalt, or painting houses, or whatever for $15 bucks an hour for 14 hours a day to feed his family and pay 100% of his family's heath insurance out of pocket as well as plan his own retirement out his own pocket isnt goint to show much support for collective barganing. Its unfortunate that you were promised things going in that they are now trying to take away now, in fact, I'd be down right pissed. However, many of us were never promised or guarenteed anything. We show up, do our job and take home our wage. Anything beyond that like insurance and retirement is completey up to us and will only happen on our own dime.

Not trying to argue or stir ****, just wanted to let you know how the other side sees it.

The boat is going well. I got ten hours on it last fall and pulled the motors looking for more power. They are ready to drop in again now Hope to see you in the Cig at Kellys this summer.

I understand both sides of the situation. I've been closely involved since the 60's through my father. I see it as a pendulum which has been swinging back and forth with little time spent in the middle. The unions have abused as well as the companys.

When I joined the Navy, I signed a contract. When we went to war, could I have said? "wait, situation has changed and I am no longer able to fulfill my end of the bargan we BOTH agreed to previously. I'm out...

What's the difference? What is keeping us from dumping on our disabled vets who fought in our needed? wars and saying sorry guys, we can't keep our end of the bargan, we need the money for a bridge to nowhere so you'll have to take care of yourself. Joe does at Joe's Bar and Grill. Why should you get anything better than him? Joe has to buy his own care... Sorry we promised you new legs if we blew them off...

My bad for trusting our government...

As Rogue said, I chose this job. Boo Hoo... I trusted my government to keep up their end of the bargan. I could have made more money in the private sector. I could have invested in my own retirement plan... wait I did and he didn't. Take mine away so we are equal... sorry he didn't pay 90k into his retirement plan but don't worry they'll take mine so I'm not special. I didn't earn or deserve it anyway.
