The Day SVL Died

I dont get it.....How did this all of the sudden become a lets bash Randy thread? This has everything to do with sportsmanship or lack thereof.

Steve, Randys typical for not returning calls or answering his phone. He has no knowledge of how to use his phone, voice mail, and either, leaves his phone somewhere or forgets his charger. That is certainly one of my pet peavs.

He is extremely passionate about racing. Moreso than most of us. And to pin this on him is just plain unfair.

He's not claiming to be king of the sea. He won a race on Sunday, plain and simple.

your quote:
"These racer's claim to be "professionals" not sure how that is possible with a hobby for middle aged men in less than spectacular physical condition that drink heavily but it's their dream so let's roll with it."

this only applies to a select few. Not all. Most are just middle age and out of shape. I'll admit, Randy is in less than great physical condition, and he does love his beer. But he is still a passionate racer and no one can deny that.

The topic here is the survival of the only remaining viable class in offshore. We should be trying to work it out (offline) privately. There is no positive input whatsoever, from anyone here. It all starts with respect of one another and If we cannot have an open mind, it will never work and as Mike A so eloquently said, our Boats will be worth nothing. So lets all go poker running.

Bruce
I called you and you promptly returned my call when I could not reach Randy. I believe we had a good talk as always.

You were able to reach Randy and call me back and say he did want to race us on these conditions. Based on this I have a hard time with Randy not picking up the phone and calling me or returning my text message.

I think I was fair and calm in this situation I said nothing about this until all this other bragging started. You have raced with me and Gary in the rough and you know we can certainly hold our own against any of the old SVL boats.

If Randy was all that people are making him out to be he would have said bring it or at minimum picked up the phone.

To make matters worse I informed you (I assume you told Randy) and Bob M. George was on the way. Rather than calling him and saying how they felt they let him travel 7 hours and confronted him with mob mentality in the parking lot.

This is cowardly and poor sportsmanship to say the least.
Steve

Concerning the middle aged out of shape comment. I was speaking of myself also. Some of us are fit and you are certainly one of them as is Gary. The funny thing is I stole that quote from Asif he used it when he bailed out of Europe. Funny how Martin is acting like and people are believing he changed his opinion.

First of all;

This reminds me of St Clair when a whole lot of people, Who Were Not There, made a whole lot of statements about stuff from hearsay. I was at both that event, and talked with everyone involved, and this event.

Here's my truth,

There were four racers in SVL who showed up to race for the OPA World Championship. Those four had a discussion, made a decision, and decided that they thought what would be best for OPA, Offshore Racing, and the excitement of the spectators, was to run a close race until the very last half part of the last lap and then go for the win. To make sure they could accomplish this, they decided to forgo points awarded until Sunday.

To make this happen they decided that if someone got a breakaway out front, they would slow and let the pack catch up, then it was Balls Out again. The four of them decided that the Sunday race would be the only one that would decide the Championship for the four of them. After all, there were only four boats legal to compete for the Championship according to the rules.

Then, my opinion, Smitty made an error because he is not only a racer, but he is also the promoter and the guy in charge of boat count. So he made a few calls. "These guys decided to not count points on Friday, so why don't you come out and race for the Championship on Sunday????"

George came, decided if he couldn't race for the Championship he wouldn't stay, and left. I was disappointed he didn't stay. But, he wasn't part of the group who showed up to race and voted to make one of the most interesting events offshore to watch in a long time. I believe Steve made a call to some of those involved and checked first, then decided not to come.

Bob Teague and Mikey both said it was one of the most exciting races they had ever called. You couldn't tell they weren't racing, no holds barred, until the last lap. The fastest GPS I know of in that run was 91mph.

There are many races where the last lap is the telling lap. That they decided to run that way and not count points is fine with me. If you disagree for some reason, then that is your opinion. But, slamming the group even though you weren't there, wrong.

I believe they told George he could stay and race for the purse, just not the Championship. I wish he would have.

As far as Randy not being a racer, maybe you should check with those there in SVL and Class 4. He won both, but broke out in Class 4, not by much. But, I was there when he handed Jim the flag at the awards banquet and gave him the hug and congratulations.

Raticle you seem to be a very nice person ,and most reasonable But  There was no race at a race site according to ???

Can someone tell me how to close this thread? Bruce made a great post this morning. Then a certain genuis comes on here and casts stones - which he allows himself to do as the moderator - and others continue to pile on. WTF? Can you people not take "YES" for an answer? For cripes sake.

I guess the most confusing part to me is...I thought the SVL teams don't like GPS racing because you can not run all out and your speed is limited....but then you sit in a pack and limit your speed to the last lap...
Keep in mind...with fans now knowing this..guys...guess what the fans will be thinking the next time there is a close race...."are they really racing or waiting for the last lap"....

And yes...he is the driver....

Thanx Gino . He has a nice ride .Thats why I guess I dont understand why he go,s along with the OB four ? No matter its his right .

And youre right ,The trust is broken .That will not be forgotten , Sorry it just wont .

I only hope the real SVL racers get a handle on this .
They have a good class , good people ,good boats .

Leave these four to race the fountain ,Done deal .All are happy .

Pathetic you say Mike A.? You are the definition of pathetic. You have caused more damage to this class than all the other racers put together.Obviously that is your goal. You try to hide behind a few kind words on how you want to save the class, then come back with a hundred negative words badgering other racers who really are putting there hearts into it and actually show up for races. Then you defend those racers who pick and choose depending on who the competition is.You will really look like a fool when you find out who's idea it was to put on a good close race for a couple laps, then battle it out for the rest of the race in Orange Beach. You dont know what you are talking about cause you weren't there. You blame Randy of team Typhoon,Little did you know he was the last one to agree to it.There you go! looking like a Damn Fool again.Maybe you need to go to car racing and get off this thread. You could get a high performance Smart Car cause your so damn Smart! Face it Mike A. you failed in 2003.What makes you think you could do it now, If you couldnt do it then? If your so concerned that everybody is doing everything wrong, why dont you just get away from it and let them fail like you did.By the way,I couldnt find where Randy was bragging about winning.Could you quote it for me.And also, isnt Randy the only SVL to run four races in Orange Beach? So please explain to me how he was afraid to break his equipment.

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.
