I dunno about the guy that died in the Camry, I hope a CHP guy would be better informed than that. I was talking about the 90 mph Prius guy from a couple of weeks ago. He was told to shut it off and/or put it in Neutral, he didn't ask how, or say he tried to already, he just said "I'm trying to control the car."
yep, there was four people that died in that Lexus accident in cali. They had time to call 911 and talk to the dispatcher for a couple minutes before they crashed. Just goes to show ya that when your in a panic even the best or smartest drivers make mistakes and cant think straight. Not gonna turn this into a p*ssin match but theres really no problem with the fly by wire system in the toyotas,mostly driver error. Let me tell ya I'm making a killin doin all the toy recalls...... kinda good but kinda bad for toyota.

i heard there was a ? on it working that there had still been problems. also most all makes are drive by wire and you don't here then having this problem so there has to be something there.
After tightening it, tack weld the nut. Won't ever go anywhere.
I had a Prius rental for a couple of days two weeks ago. Pressing the brake pedal works wonders if you want to stop. The accelerator pedal lockout also worked fine when the brake pedal is depressed. Depressing the start/stop button also worked fine. Like the car and Driver test from 100 mph, pressing the brake pedal hard while flooring the gas pedal, also stopped the car.
Much easier than putting out fires on F150 fires caused by the speed control.

I'm old enough to remember the Audi 5000 "unintended acceleration" thing in the early 80's.
There were numerous instances of "I had BOTH FEET on the brake pedal when it plowed through the garage/school/McDonalds" I remember the US CEO of Audi offering a brand new Audi 5000 to anyone that could get one to move under its own acceleration while he was sitting in the driver's seat with his foot on the brake.
Nonetheless, it still damn near ruined Audi.

You should have seen the argument I had with my wife when I told her people were stupid for not knowing to just turn the key off. She politely explained (yelling) that SHE wouldn't have known to do that. She further explained she would be afraid of the vehicle stopping dead and her flying through the window or something. We have now agreed that she will put it in neutral and let the rev limiter deal with it (she has a Nissan, but it's also fly by wire). And she has been married to a Master Auto tech for 24 years so I guess there are a lot of people that just have no idea what to do when a car freaks out.

same here mine had no idea and i am a master tech. She also parked a car 1 block from our house and walked home one time cause the check engine light came on:willy_nilly: i steel feel the best thing to do is kick it out of gear that way you still have power steering and brakes to help get it stoped.
I was pretty sure my wife would have no clue what to do either so that is why I explained the steps to her and then we practiced them on the country roads behind my house. I got a kick out of the statement the guy with the "runaway Prius" from California made when asked why he didn't just put the car in neutral. He responded that he thought the car would flip.
That did happen on older Ford column shifts because they wore out the detents and got all sloppy, the weight of the shift arm could pull it down. Of course the shift arms were manly metal back then too.

no i know...just playing the other side for a minute and asking guys that would know if the computer control could screw enough up that n wouldn't work and key er push button wouldn't shut it off.
After we saw the story, I looked at my wife, after telling the tv the guy was an idiot and said what would you do. She was like um, i said first try n, then brake. Don't worry if the motor makes loud noises just stop normal and then turn it off.

Hahahaha!!!......I had a customer once (woman in her 70s) went to her house to fix the furnace......when I turned the t stat up full to try and get the furnace to start she jumped and let out a yelp....I asked her what was the matter she said she thought if you turned the t stat up full the furnace would EXPLODE!!!!....I kid you not
true, you dont hear much of the other manufacturers having these problems but they do. I have seen first hand a new 06 cadilac drive straight through our shop,full speed right through the brick wall.the driver states stepping on the brakes with both feet...... who knows. I drive thousands of toyotas every year and never had a problem yet

Having a throttle stick on a snowmobile or high performance atv, now that is a wild ride, hitting that red button or yanking the tether is not as easy as it sounds bouncing down the trail.
