PLasmas are brighter, use more energy, have a wider veiwing angle, but are usually more expensive and are harder to find in resolutions above 720 P.
LCD's are cheaper, a little dimmer, usually have a narrower viewing angle, but you can find higher resolutions and they wont usually use as much electricity.
Both technologies have image issues but different ones.
PLasmas can "burn" a white image into a screen temporarily
LCD's have a hard time making a true black picture
Go plasma! I have three of them and love them, the plasma is quicker to react to speed such as sports and races, you can now get them in 600hz which is sick also 1080p. Not that it matters but is cool the viewing angle is like 179°. To tell the truth you can't go wrong with LCD or Plasma. My buddy just bought a Samsung 50" 600hz 1080P with wall mount for $1020.00 OTD. Go 1080p whatever you do. Most of all the new tv's will be 1080p anyway!
What about large hadron fifth dimensional projection units. I know the picture is awesome but the black hole in the living room can be a bit of a nuisance.
Dave I know that you don't live in Michigan but I can get you a great deal in Sterling Heights Michigan on a 50" Samsung 1080P 600HZ Plasma with a five year warranty for $1300 OTD

Then last week my 3 year old 32" Westinghouse crashed; liked the 1st Sony so much bought a 32" Sony to replace it.
$1K for a TV today, replace it in 3 years for $1K. The one you buy in 3 years will be 10 times better than spending $2K now and keeping it 6 years. Same time frame, same amount of money but over 50% of that time you will be watching a much better picture.
I never liked LCD's but my room had too much light so went with the LCD to keep the glare down. I can tell the action is not as smooth as a plasma.
We are at the stage where the limiting factor in picture quality is the home reception chain which delivers a lousy signal to noise ratio, (under 40 DB with most cable) and the satellite services are HIGHLY compressed delivering a few MB per second from the original source materials 180MB plus for RGB 444 mastered material.
LCDs are lighter than plasmas and won't have a glare problem a plasma can. Plasmas are generally 42" and larger and should have a better picture. LCDs have some trouble with quick movements on the screen (blurring) and with alot of black in the picture. Also the picture quality can degrade from certain angles. Also plasmas can burn images in the screen if you have a show with the same banner all day, like stock quotes.
