Plasma vs LCD

The only reason IMHO to buy a plasma would be if the way your room is situated people would be watching at extreme viewing angles.

Plasmas are power hogs, just feel the heat coming of one. The new 120Mhz LCD's are much smoother than previous 60Mhz models and the blacks are getting close to plasma's also.

FYI - LED's are still LCD TV's but they are backlit with LED's for less power consumption.

LED's are getting the wrong hype. It is a regular LCD TV! Normally the LCD TV has florescent tubes (like in an office building) around all 4 edges to light the screen. Most LED TV's use LED's around the edge instead of florescent tubes.
Now LG makes real LCD TV's that have a full array of LED's behind the LCD panel. Those look great. The best LCD TV I have seen to date is NuVision. No BullSh*t marketing hype, just a fantastic picture.
However plasma still has a better picture. As far as power hogs, more marketing hype! At full white screen a plasma will use more energy than an LCD. You watch white screens? I don't! Stop drinking the kool aid. Go to a specialty shop and LOOK! Don't fall into the bigger is better trap either (marketing 101) 240hz is better than 120hz which is better than 60hz - not really!!!!!

The big box stores will likely steer you to Samsung cause they make great profit. Sony? Unless you buy the XBR stuff, all Sony's are re-badged Samsungs. http://www.forbes.com/2008/03/04/sony-lcdtv-samsung-markets-equity-cx_jc_0304markets04.html with different menu's and operating systems loaded.
Like buying a Wellcraft badged boat, but was made by Bayliner. They may change the window dressing, but a turd is still a turd. (BTW: Yes I sell Sony, Samsung, LG, etc, etc - but you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink)

I have a couple Samsungs and so do my parents and we love them. They do make much of Sony and other manufacturers equipment. The LCD is the way to go picture vs. cost. Also, check Costco and the like for great deals on these things, just do your homework first.

For the average person 2 things really matter.

Plasmas generally look better to the average person. more vivid colors
LCD's are stupid proof (no burn in)

if you have kids that pause video games and you don't want to worry, go LCD. otherwise, go plasma. Or just buy a good deal.

I have 2 plasmas. Both panasonic. Both look fantastic.

If I were buying a new flat-screen HDTV today, I would get this SAMSUNG 58-inch Plasma. $1700

However, I have plenty of room for a non flat-screen, so I would look real hard at this Mitsubishi 65-inch DLP. $2000
