Verado and Ethanol

Any had any issues with gas with ethanol in it. A friend of mine had his 275 Verados shut down one at a time. He barely made it back to port when the third one died. A mechanic suggested it was due to ethanol in the fuel. Any ideas????

We have had the same problem a couple of times. It is a fuel float switch, Very common Problem we actually keep an extra one in the boat just in case. Any knowledgeable Verado mechanic will know what you are talking about. Good Luck.

Doesn't the ethanol base fuel cause water in the tank? My brothers Merc mechanic said to run a fuel preservative all the time because of the ethanol fuels.

The big problem is the ethanol destroys the float switch. We change about 25 a year, also the hi flow pump can go bad on the Verados. If you have a warranty they cover the floats. Thats why the marine industry is fighting E20,, E10 is bad enough. Its not the water in E10 thats the problem. Its more of the mixture thats makes E10 like an acid substance. Thats why E10 will strips paint, eats plastic and destroy plastic fuel tanks. The bad part of ethanol is its shelf life after 3 months.

Not to mention about another thousand disadvantages both chemical and political...

And our great Goverment wants E-20 approved for use.. WTF if that goes through, you better start adding Octane Booster into your gas and keep a pump aboard to get the water out of the tank. Politicians are A## holes.
