i've ended up like that so many times

Whats the story of Eggmont?

It's a beautiful little island at the mouth of Tampa Bay. It's surrounded by some of the finest crystal clear water on the gulf side. There are some deep holes around the island and the fish run thick. It's the site of an old Spanish Fort, and later (in the early-to-mid 20th century it was a Coast Guard base). There's a cool, old lighthouse on it that still serves to mark the entrance into Tampa Bay to this day. You can tour the island and check out the old fort, etc. It's really nice. I've regularly been visited by sea turtles and dolphins while anchored off the coast.

That sounds like a great place to spend some time on the water. As much as I love the Pacific Northwest, I get a little jealous when I see places like Egmont.
Cheers

On the gulf side of the island, part of the old fort has fallen in the water. People love to snorkel there (I prefered to fish it early before the snorkler were up :) )

On the north end of the island, not 100 feet of the beach, there is a hole gouged out by the tide that rips through there that is 100 feet deep. You'd have to go west in the gulf for 30 more miles before you found water that deep again. Caught many a big redfish in the hole. There are rocks at the bottom of the channel that hold grouper, but you have to catch it on a slack tide, otherwise, when you drop and eight ounce weight straight down, it will look like you're trolling! Once, I was fishing that hole, there were so many bonito running, you could hear them running into the boat. I even managed to get one on with a flyrod (breifly before it cut the 8# leader :) ) The south end of the isand is the Southwest Pass, home of many a large kingfish. In short, I boated at, or fished at that key for 35 years. I have, or had a pic of Nick, me, and two other boats rafted up off Egmont back when he was Bajadaze. :)

Btw Nick, Egmont is spelled with only one "G"'
