Wood Barrel Raft

So I want to build a wood barrel raft for the lake this summer. Anybody have any experience with building one? I was thinking 15x20, with room for a water slide, diving platform, ladder, and a couple other goodies. Am I better off covering it with carpet/astro turf or some sort of plastic decking? I am open to any and all suggestions.
