Why the cost???

I actually wonder why does it cost so much to build a boat?
I think most would agree with me, the boat itself (hull & deck) is usually the least expensive component. The major costs come in to dressing it up, power and trailer. Usually those components exceed the bare hull costs in itself... At least in my opinion anyway....:cheers2:

That is exactly why I used 1" Material for all up coring in my small boats this giving too the swamped flotation via construction,(without the horrible two part foam)Plus nowadays the new design Programs have the ability to output the Hydrostatic Properties (curves of form) we used to have do this the old fashioned way FUN!!

Definitely an interesting take?

I never post here but I have to say you hit the nail on the head.

Why is a 3 kw marine generator $5k and a 3 kw Home Depot generator $500.

Just one outrageous example.

Because in continous marine use a $5k boat generator will last a thousand hours and a $500 home depot one will last a hundred hours?

The things you don't really see are usually what cost so much! I had over $8000 in stainless hose and blue and red fittings in Lubejobs. The stainless 2 1/2" fittings are $220 each and we needed 6 of them.
I remember standing at the counter of Hydraulic supply waiting for them to get the fittings. I was standing there with $200 in my hand expecting the fittings to be $20 each!

Everything has to be custome made which usually means in and out 3 or 4 times with the adjusting.
The amount of time to customize parts for these boats is crazy.

When I ordered tailpipes for the Motion, they had me make an exact set put of PVC and send them to CMI before they would even start. Even with that they had to go back twice and every change cost me. It wasalways my fault even though they had a Mock set up that fit perfect

If you ever think of of buying an older boat and rerigging it to save money rather then buying newer finished boat, ask your wife to kick you in the nuts, it will be a lot less painful!!!!!

And I am sure it was stated before - but its all driven by overall production volume too - correct?

We all know if they sold marine generators at the same velocity as THD generators - there would be more competition, production facilities would run longer more effecient runs, they would buy materials better, etc..

It is this way in our business. :cheers2:

I have been gone for a while I cannot belive people are still commenting on this. I do understand the cost in custom one off boats but I was more referring to production (fountian, formula, donzi, etc) Even those companies performace boats do not compare to the cruisers in what you get dollar for dollar. The companies just kept prices high and felt it would go on forever the ones that will survive are the ones that realize those days are gone.
