I'm a "bogey golfer"- 1ish over per hole, good enough to have fun but more importantly good enough for the important people to invite me along. Ever since I picked up my first club, golf has helped my bottom line.
That can also backfire.........I have played with a few people that I would never play with again! If the guy makes an azz of himself I don't want to be there with him!
We have several clubs in the area that are super exclusive and many are started by famous PGA players that live locally. Make an azz of yourself at one club and you will never visit the others!
Bear's Club- 150K to join, started by Nicklaus. Michael Jordan/Ernie Els live there.
Ritz Carlton Residences Jupiter- on site as Bear's but less money to join, it is the step child of Bears
Jupiter Hills Club- 100K+ to join, Top 100 Club in America- Mostly CEO's of Fortune 500 companies.
McCarthur Club- 100K+ to join, Started by Nick Price
Medalist Club- 100K+ to join, Started by Greg Norman
Seminole- 140+ to join, Oceanfront club, lots of CEO/old money members
Loxahatchee 100K+ to join-B level celebrities like Bryant Gumbel- lots of Canadian members
Lost Tree Village- 100K+ to join- Lots of old money- Nicklaus has lived there for 40 years. Course isn't great but if you want to hang out with wallstreet yesterday's heroes like Jack Welch then this is your winter spot!
All of these clubs are within a 10 mile radius (6 are within a 5 mile radius) and are all aiming for the same client base. 20 years ago 4 were on this list the other clubs have popped up as competition. Rumor had it that McCarthur was stumbling a bit and Jupiter's newest resident Tiger was going to buy it but it never happened. Some clubs would have denied him membership before the "incident" but now they all would with the exception of Bear's Club (they will take anyone with the money). These big clubs don't want publicity or idiots out picketing their front gate everytime Tiger comes to play.
All of the clubs are running into problems recruting new members due to less people playing, less money for them to join with and in general lack of interest but the clubs need the members/dues to keep these places operating. These are just the high end clubs, there are dozens more "country clubs" that basically take anyone with the money and that buy a house in the community.
I am happy to pay $100 a round in season for the one or two times I play per year rather than getting soaked for 10-12K a year in dues on a place I don't frequent!
