What would be fair to charge

if he is in the military, I forget exactly how , but you contact his branch of service, find out his c.o. send him a letter or call and it will be taken care of. also remember if he got called to active duty his pay probably went from good to squat.

Hi Brian,

The original question was what would be fair to charge. I agree with Chris that 250.00 a month is steep. I feel for your situation, just think that it may be too much to be able to recover later. Of course, you are storing it in a shop, rather than a warehouse, and that is a more premium space. Plus... it is a default type of deal rather than a normal storage arrangement. Still...as much as it sucks, I think you should consider less.
I paid 350 for the entire off season until April indoors for a 28 brave. (In a place that stores mostly cars.) Maybe... 60 bucks a month?

I know the principle behind this is probably eating at you. It can be very frustrating to not get any answer at all from someone in a situation like this.

I understand you need the room in your shop, but it sounds like there is a chance you could end up owning this car for not very much $$$- are you sure you want to put it outside? just sayin...

One other thing- it is possible he has taken a big financial hit recently and is trying to get his stuff in order... not your problem, I know... but it seems odd that there has been no contact from his end- there may be a reason.

The problem is I have 4 projects in the same situation. 1 of them has been going on for 5 years another for 2 years the Cuda for 1 and the last is in the beginning stages at 6 months. I know the economy is in trouble and money is tight but does that mean I have to store these cars and boats until it gets better for free. Also understand that 7 of my own have been sitting outside while theres are in a heated and A/C building.

2200 sq ft of my building was office space with 7 offices, waiting room and conference room which I did not need. It had an 8 foot drop ceiling with a unfinished 10 foot ceiling above it. Over the last 2 months we gutted it for storage space to store my boat and 4 of my cars and free up some the shop space.

I will not be putting the car outside or charging him $250.00 a month that was more of a threat to get some response out of this guy. Last night some of the regulars came over for cocktails and we discussed the situation. I decided that $1000.00 for the year was the most reasonable I could be. Today I am driving to his house to see if anybody is home with hopes of resolving this.

I also commend a couple of guys here for there knowledge as there is more to this car than I have told. Within 2 minutes of looking at the the car I knew it was not the real deal. The story I got from the owner is in high school his dad bought him a 1970 AAR Cuda brand new. It was his only car and drove it for many years but held onto it and in the mid 80's he took it to a restorer in Detroit call Rapid Transit. They had the car for 5 years and this is what he got back. It is not a 1970 it is is a 1971 there is no Trans Am tag on inner fender they told him the lost it in the restoration along with his dash. They gave him a new title for the 1971 and told him they were sorry. This is an A/C car it does not have the original block or heads but does have the 6 pack and side exit exhaust. They ripped this guys car off and he did not know it until I brought it here. I spent 2 months researching and looking for his original car with nothing found but he could not come up with his original serial numbers which made suspicious and I quit looking.

I charge $200.00CDN per month plus taxes for indoor, heated and insured up to 250k CDN. My shop has about 75 cars in it right now.

250USD is way too much. If you are insuring it I wouldnt feel bad at all about charging the guy an appropriate rate but if you arent insuring it then I would slash the rate down. In US dollars an insured rate should be around 150 per month and uninsured around 60 to 80 bucks month. So you are pretty muich bang on if you arent insuring it.

On a side note...

I get pissed off when a client wants me to transport his 250k Ferrari but argues with me over 50 bucks because some Paki trucking outfit gave him a cheaper quote to haul it in a reefer trailer with a 5000$ deductible on 2 dollars a pound freight insurance. :ack2:....

To this day, I still remember the Serial number to my first car.
LP27D9B174134

But by the time I bought it, it had a 318 in it.

If he lives close enough for you to drive by, how about taking whatever it owed out of it in parts and have it towed to his house? Block his driveway- he'll figure out real quick how he wants to store it from there on out.

I like my 1st idea- make it yours and then sell it or whatever.

DOCUMENT ALL THAT YOU ARE DOING TO CONTACT HIM!!

He is about 20 miles away and I will be going over about 5PM. I thought about loading the car and doing just that but he is stationed down south and I would not want his wife to have to deal with it. When we picked the car up he had it covered and packed with crap. It took us an hour to load it and I brought 1 of my guy's along to help while the owner just watched. I should have gotten a clue it was go to be trouble.

you could call everyone you know to your shop and do one of those 1 week restore jobs on it. then trailer it to his house in an enclosed trailer and surprise him on Christmas morning wrapped with a big bow tie and a card that simply states "Merry Christmas" . but make sure you leave before he comes out and sees you....:)

I'll bet you were standing there thinking.... oh crap...is it too late to run away?

Went to the house yesterday and lights were on but nobody home. I left a note in the door and still no contact. I will try all 4 numbers and email again today but I think that legal action is the only way I can resolve this and get his attention.

Sounds like he lost interest after you discovered that his car was possibly switched on him by Rapid Transit.

That is really odd. I cant imagine someone with even moderate means would risk loosing/abandoning that car.

Actually I was at ease with the nice house and cars. It was not until I got the car to the shop and started looking at it and soon realize it was not the car he thought it was. First question I asked him after looking at it was the A/C issue and from the under carriage I could see that cars original color was yellow not burnt orange. Then I ran the serial numbers to find it was a 1971 that is when he told me about the Rapid Transit ordeal in the 80's. They went out of business in the late 80's but the owner is still active on mopar sites. I joined them and posted the story that was told to me with no response. I have about 30 hours of researching and looking for his original car that I did not charge him for but gave up when he could not give me his original serial numbers. At that point I was not sure if I believed he ever really had a 1970 AAR Cuda to begin with.

If I remember correctly the owner of Rapid Transit was named Gary?? I was there a long time ago and it was a big old run down warehouse in Detroit, an old friend of mine rented some space there and was doing some repairs on my 1970 440-6bbl GTX. I think Gary?? had a 1970 charcoal grey Superbird that he had grafted a Road Runner air-grabber hood onto.

There are other places on that Cuda' to find the the numbers to reveal it's true identity.
