Vision 32 Sets Record As First 100-MPH Electric Boat In History At Shootout

With a 104-mph pass, Shaun Torrente and the team at Vision Marine Technologies Inc. can lay claim to an on-water top speed record for an electric boat after Torrente made his run during the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in a 32-foot Hellkats Powerboats-constructed catamaran powered by a pair of E-Motion 180E 180-hp, 160-kilowatt electric outboards.

They are no where close to the first electric boat over 100 mph. The boat that holds the current world record for an electric boat was over 100 in 2018. The record it set was at almost 89 for a two way average of their speeds over a 1 Kilo course. So well over 2 Kilos total averaged.

Way back in 2012 our friend Lohring Miller, (from my home area out in Eugene, Oregon and who happen to also run Dry Martini overseas), set a world record for the two way average also, and in their runs were over 100 both directions. They were over 100 best way back in 2008 when they set the American record average over 98 mph.

In the speed graphs on page 3, post 44, you can see their speed passes and where they were over 100mph both directions for short times during setting their documented world speed record.

What was done at LOTO was kinda cool, but it is not the first electric boat over 100. That happened over 10 years ago.

They ran 109 today, that's damn good!

I'll try to find out what the top speed from Lohrings runs was best case. I don't think it was 109, but don't quote me on that. I recall they were over 100 for around 20 seconds, but they also had to save energy to make the two way passes required.

We actually went over 100 during one pass, but Mike had to lift a little. Below are the data logs from our record runs. The battery current and voltage is from one 6S pack. There were 6 packs in series and 7 in parallel. In my opinion, records must be sanctioned by a recognized body and set as a two way average over a measured course. We made several short runs in testing over 100. That said, modern hydros should be able to hit way over 100 with modern batteries and motors. We had around 90 to 100 hp to the propeller allowing for the speed control and brushed motor efficiency. My Tesla Model 3 has around 450 hp. Modern brushless motors should be capable of close to 1000 hp for the short kilo runs. Heating isn't much of a problem and there's lots of water in Devils Lake. My favorite setup would be an Ellison hydro with a junk Tesla power plant. There is a Tesla Supercharger minutes from Devils Lake.

I'll do some checking on a project I know about.

It's just really odd that people compare a radar gun shot over 100 to a two way back to back mile average at 99 where you were over 100 for much of the first pass.

It is the first pleasure boat over 100 though, as far as I know.
