The Minnesota Vikings fired head coach Brad Childress on Monday, one day after a 31-3 loss at home to the Green Bay Packers dropped the team to 3-7.
The Vikings named defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier interim head coach.
The move comes in the midst of a disappointing season in Minnesota, which recruited QB Brett Favre back to the team in August with the expectation of making a run toward the Super Bowl again. The Vikings lost to the New Orleans Saints in overtime of the NFC title game last season.
This year, Childress appeared to lose support of his own players, particularly after he cut WR Randy Moss in early November just four games after the team traded a third-round pick to acquire him.
Childress went 39-35 in almost five full years as the Vikings' head coach. His high point was last season, when the Vikings won the NFC North title at 12-4 with a magical season from a 40-year-old Favre.
But Favre, with just 10 TD passes and 17 INTs this year, has been unable to reproduce that performance.
Frazier may now have to decide whether to move forward with Favre as the starter. Favre, who has started 295 straight regular-season games dating back to 1992, said after Sunday's loss that he needs to "re-evaluate" his status. But Favre has consistently said he wants to keep playing through the end of the year.
The Packers, who beat the Vikings on Sunday, have now become coach-killers to the two NFL head coaches fired this season. They beat Dallas 45-7 a day before Wade Phillips was fired too.
