This past Friday I was invited to lake x by scout boats and mercury marine to drive the new v 12 on the new 425lxf scout along with another new model. All i can say is wow, that motor is awesome. I was there with dealers and a few potential customers (which I am, as Paul knows ,my wife's 5 scout is on order) , dealers. Marine max/skipper buds ceo, viage owner....... .First off the motor looks huge. It is but when on a 42' boat not so bad. The sea ray and Boston whaler were in the parking lot, specs and performance can be seen on mercury's web site for 5 boats. First off the motor sound like a tesla, prius.... running, that quiet at 50 on the boat is wind noise current boat is louder w 4 350 vrod's. Shifting is thru a zf trans so smooth as silk. no clunk like normal vrod especially while in skyhook mode. When it shifts gears hard to tell, and it changes based on load like a car. My self and another customer who has his 2nd 53 scout on order tried to fine a weird spot on throttles to find the shift point but could not. Turning I felt was as good if not better, the lower/pod has more angle than a normal ob to turn. The motor not turning is not a big deal how many time do you look at your motor to see where they are, if you have an inboard cruiser rudder angle is on garmin. There was a cut away of the motor all huge gears, twin props......... Its not by any means a small boat motor, its market i feel is to go from 4 to 2 motors....... The fuel burn on the scout was better than 4 300s and speed matched. My down side is not sure cost if you hit or damage the lower and its not a power head replacement its a rebuild like any quad cam merc racing motor, not sure costs yet.
