V-16 LPG/Eickert

The reliability, weight saving, and pump gas all make sense for 1500 HP and 1600 Lb. ft., but what application can it really work in? With the length of 2 bigblocks end to end no V bottom will work because you can't stagger, which any boat with 1500's will be a stagger boat 40+ feet long. So cats may work, how many can fit the engine length?? I am guessing (40,46 Skater, 43,50 Nor-Tech, 48,55 MTI, 50 Mystic). Out of all these, theres maybe what 20-30 built a year max, and how many would build with the V-16 package? So what is the market for this package?

I'd love seperated lightweight aluminum 750's however!!

Sounds like the perfect set up for this...

Maybe 4 of them. If I recall, it weighs something like 22K/lbs. It had quad 1200's and didn't break 150.

I was offered that boat 10 years ago while it still had the drives on it for $25k. I think the Ebay BIN is like 65. After another decade of baking in the California sun, I don't think it gotten into any better condition.

The original Gentry Eagle- the wooden 48 Cougar Tom bought from Howard Arneson- had quads on two drives. It used staggared engines that both fed separate inputs on the chain boxes. If I remember, the tin boat had jackshafts. I do remember the 35 Cougar that Al copeland built with 8 or 10 Merc 2.4 OB powerheads- they were slaved to two jackshafts via 3" gilmer belts- blower belts.

This one? What was the advantage of this compared to a couple big blocks?

I have been there and yes the engines were on the dyno. Not real hard to get 1500hp out of two big blocks. Don Onkin was talking about numbers of 2000 hp N/A V16 engines as not hard to achieve. He has four 1000 N/A hp engines in his 46 Skater now. Areneson drives will be the drive of choice. Many cats will have the room. I think it is very cool setup if you want 1500 hp and reliablilty.

Power to weight ratios and size. At least for that time.

Correct- between 6 & 8 2 stroke outboard powerheads can put out a lot of beans.

add in that there werent stock- These guys spent money like it was going out of style...

6-8 strokes heads with ported uppers + real expansion chambers + stroker kits, lectron carbs etc, wiseco pistons - can really rock.

This rig had amazing potential

If youve ever seen an STV, or a mirage run or a wicked 2 stroke - then multiply it and thats what you've go there.

I saw this thing run and these picts dont do it justice nor convey its actual menace

I could have taken it home last year for $12k. And i didn't. It's in rough shape. I was just being a smartass, since that boat is already set up for quads...

whats the price of 2 1500 packages? How does it comare to the price of a Sterling 1500?
I don't think they would fit in a 44 MTI. If they did, that would be all that fit. I do think it's a cool concept if it works!

depends how much room you have in front of the motor's . And if the motor's are set foward from the transom now , they would be pushed back and maybe be able to fit , thats if you have some room in front .
Just call and find out the measurements that is needed from the transom foward

We built a pair of V-16's out of Nor-Tech 850's in 2001 for the "Warbird" 50' cat.
They were mounted back to back connected by a gear box with an output shaft back to another gear box.
