My take on it is that it's all a bunch of hype. 40,000+ Americans die each year of the regular flu, and there are countless more worldwide. This is just another SARS media panic bullsht.
Influenza A virus strains are categorized according to two proteins found on the surface of the virus: hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). All influenza A viruses contain hemagglutinin and neuraminidase, but the structures of these proteins differ from strain to strain, due to rapid genetic mutation in the viral genome.
Influenza A virus strains are assigned an H number and an N number based on which forms of these two proteins the strain contains. There are 16 H and 9 N subtypes known in birds, but only H 1, 2 and 3, and N 1 and 2 are commonly found in humans.
It swept through Toronto earlier this year -it's just a really nasty flu with about the same impact as a mild pnuemonia. I've had both - no, not diagnosed and therefore not in the stats like most of us between 6 and 60.
A fiend of mine took his wife and two young daughters to Disney in July. His wife adn youngest daughter got it. Young child recovered quickly and it almost took his wife! She is better now but had pneumonia(sp) earlier this year which Dr slowed her recovery. Thank God everyone is fine now!
My 15 year old niece had it a couple weeks ago. She missed a week of school and her temp spiked at 105 but tylenol brought it down. Other than typical aches it seemed to hit her stomach the worst. She took nothing but Tylenol and was temp free after about 4 days and back to school the following week.
The Dr's I have talked to seem to think it is just like the regular flu that hits the stomach a little worse but the media is blowing it up to make headlines.
