The latest
Morays (too old to be true) battle past the Roncos
CITIZEN STAFF
KEY WEST - Well boys and girls, it's time for the latest edition of colorful named teams with guys over 40 -- some over 60 and you know who you are -- running around the bases.
The early game in Jewfish League action last week pitted the well rested Morays (they need the rest to heal "dem" bones) and the Roncos.
Let's put it this way, the rest gained by not playing last week surely did not hurt the men in green as they quickly put 10 runs on the board in their first at bats, highlighted by Jim "Busted Legs" Guynn legging out an inside-the-park grand slam in his second at bat of the inning (if he has busted legs and legged out a homer, it does not say much for the Roncos defense or he paid them a lot of money to add to his 15 minutes of fame).
Anyway, the Roncos did not put their first runs across home plate until the bottom of the third. Meanwhile, the Morays went on to score 11 in the top of the fourth and fifth frames before the Roncos could sustain a six-run rally in the bottom of the fifth. Even an extremely surprising solo home run by John "Schleppy" Childs was not enough to get the yellow fellows on the road to a "real" comeback losing to the Morays, 26-12.
Mr. Gimpy Guynn added five singles to his in-the-parker, Harry "Did I Miss That Call" Milliken singled four times and tripled and believe it or not, James "Pops" Knowles drove in three runs on a double and three base hits (are you sure you counted that correctly, Ms. Press Secretary?).
Brant "Big Daddy" Voss thumped a three-bagger, doubled and singled, Bobcat "The Rally Killer" Mathews (only one T, Mr. Sports Editor) (I do as I'm told, Mr. Writer) doubled twice and singled for three RBI, Chuck "The Wall" Malby singled twice and doubled also for three runs scored. Dylan "The Cornhusker" Kibler and Brendan Jones each tripled and roped a base hit as Bob Maun gapped a single.
The Roncos' Hugo "Papa Smurf" Valdez singled four times, Ricky "The Washing Machine" Gonzalez smacked a three-base hit and a base hit, "Diamond" Dave Sweeting doubled and signed for three RBI, Geoff Lemos, Nick Hogan "Heroes," Tom "The Avocado" Haas, and coming out of retirement Mark "The Bug Man" Hoffer each singled twice, as Jimmy "The Big Tuna" Hake nailed a base hit.
JAIBAS 25, SNAPPERS 13
A week off was of no help to the helpless Snappers. The Jaibas put three runs on the board in their first at bat, thanks to a two-run sacrifice by Johnny "Wonder Boy" Baltzell and Junior Guieb's first of two homers.
The Snappers kept it close by putting up two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. They should have taken advantage of the one-run deficit which grew as fast as the stock market has been plummeting the past two weeks.
By the bottom of the fourth, the Jaibas built an eight-run lead adding eight more while batting through the order in the top of the sixth and six more in the seventh.
The Snappers mounted a last ditch (we'll get to trenches in a minute) rally in their final chance with the sticks adding seven, led by Eddie Griffiths' two-run shot. Even though they batted around the order, the gap in the score was as wide as the Grand Canyon, as deep as the Marianas Trench and as high as Mount Everest. Get the idea?
Pedro Arencibia was 5-for-5 with a double and four RBI, Guieb hammered two homers and two singles, Nick Hogan "Heroes," "Marky" Mark Garcia (and the Funky Bunch) each singled four times and Bobby "They Call Me Bobby" Lopez stroked three doubles and slugged a base hit to lead the Jaibas with the stick.
Matt "Whopo" McLellan singled three times, Fatz "I Always Swing at the First Pitch" Yaniz stroked a two-bagger and singled twice, the Wonder Boy drove in three runs on two hits and Stan "The Man" Griffith dealt a double.
For the last place Snappers (ouch), Tony "The Fonz" Alfonso was 5-for-5 with a two-base hit and two RBI, Tony "El Bigote" Mendez doubled and singled, Griffiths added a single and double to his homer, Nick "Pants On the Ground" Myers, Scott McCollum, Dale "Big D" Bittner, Hugo Valdez Sr., and Francis Jaycocks hoisted two hits apiece and Don "The Bear" Anderson and Rich "Hollywood" Booth each ripped a base hit.
