The World's Top Boats ????

The latest issue of Power & Motoryacht has a list of what they say are The World's Top Boats, 90 Designs That Changed Boating Forever. They have some interesting choices, I recommend reading it if you get the chance. However, all of you may find one of the choices some fun to read:

"Wellcraft Scarab 22
1994-1998 Designed by Larry Smith

Okay, So they are most likely not going to believe this. But one of our editors, many years ago, had the pure unadulterated adrenaline-rushy pleasure of operating a Wellcraft 22 Scarab at well over 70 mph in 6- to 8-foot seas on Sarasota Bay. Most Scarab models had reputations for being speedy at that time, but the 22 was, in this particular editors mind, the mind-blowingest performance boat he'd ever run, bar none. And he was basing that conclusion on previous driving experiences in Fountains, Skaters, Formulas, Cigarettes, Apaches, Donzis, Super Hawaii's Hallets, Hustlers, Sonics, and any number of other performance boats he'd had the opportunity to sea trial."

Some of their other choices:

Bayliner 17 Capri. Why?, perfect first boat and "you could tow her with a Ford Taurus (essentially this boat's automotive equivalent in ubiquity)". They flew out of the dealerships.....

Both the Bertram 31 and the Boston Whaler 13 made the list. I agree with both......

70 in 6-8ft seas in a 22ft boat:lurk5:

Thought you may enjoy that. No problem, right??????

You forgot the "well over" part of the 70......... Plus, it was on Sarasota Bay so it's not like they were talking 6-8 foot swells out in the ocean......

That love affair with the 22 Scarab throws all of his credibility down the toilet IMHO. ...He's uninformed

6-8 in Sarasota Bay? Hurricane? Going down there Friday, I'll check the surf report.

So you're saying I should withdraw my offer to buy one? I was thinking there would be some big water in Key West and go kick some Geico butt in 6 to 8's.......

The ugly azz Carver Mariner made the list. It says that in their peak they were selling 145 of them a year. They said it has been compared to a shoe and a flat iron. I think both of those descriptions are very generous.....

I think the writer of that article is the seller....along with his Carver.

So you have some hesitation in believing we could run well over 70 in 6' to 8' seas in that boat?

I read it in a magazine, not on the internet. It has to be true.......:)

Funny guy, there is no such "Official" thing. The pseudo metric foot is only 1/60th shorter than a real 12" foot (30 cm total).
