The Great Unification

Offshore today

Where it is now can be debated forever. What is clear is that it is a shadow of 2003.
The strongest circuit is SBI JC has a solid schedule and appears to have TV. JC has proven he can outlast any group that appears on the radar.

Next is OPA Smitty has a loyal group that follows him. His racer's appear to trust him and the P class model is his stock and trade.

OSS is simply a clone of the LLC without all of the perks (Speed TV , corporate sponsors, big fleet solid schedule strong tech team). In reality OSS should have never been anything more then an owners group that lobbied the sanctioning body for their influence. Had OSS just ran with Bob Bull the sport would be in much better shape today.

So everyone claims they want it to grow Offshore. Unfortunately it appears that is only if it is their way. OSS wants to stay what they are and Smitty and JC coexist it appears pretty well.

The simple solution is that Smitty runs under APBA sanction with JC's blessing and support (if it's really affordable and JC and Smitty would do it). OSS becomes an owners group that could sanction some APBA events (if it's really affordable and JC would do it).

Too simple? In a word yes

If I was JC I would not jump into any deal as he is holding some good cards and is the proven sole survivor.

If I was Smitty i would say JC and I are fine. We go to KW and are treated well but any additional cost is hard to absorb.

From OSS point of the racers appear to be in denial. It is clear they have lost out greatly by running off in this boycott. They continue to boycott to the point of sitting out a final event (worlds). When they could have run in KW and helped get the sport on track. The schedule this year is spotty and I would guess funds are very tight.

In this economy sponsors TV deals etc are rare. If you are financially weak you will scare most any deal off.

What should happen is all the racers should be hitting the SBI events with their respective flags. Smitty as a divisional NE circuit. OSS as an owners group/promoter. When you combine this with the SBI fleet the TV show will be better and the sport will look more professional.

282 post later and where have we gotten??? Remember when post!!! People still mad at people from 7 years ago!!! STOP!!!! Build for the future we all need to get past the past.

Steve,
I see your biased opinion and understand your take. I see it a little different. JC has some good things going, but to say he is the strongest is a stretch in my mind. He only had 2 teams run a full schedule last year. He survives on Key West. OPA has a good plan and a great group of racers. When you count their full season participants they are not any stronger than OSS. The teams that choose to race with OSS tend to run the most races. Sure a few race with everyone, but OSS has the highest percentage of full season racers. Based on last seasons results of all groups.

Steve speaks of the boycott like it was yesterday. It was 7 years ago wasn't it.

Steve come race and see if you still got it. We have a bunch of SVL that would like to show you the long way around a race course. :biggrinjester:

I speak of the boycott like it was a little less than 6 years ago but you guys are still acting it out like it was yesterday!

Why should someone build you a racing future Randy? Why don't you do it? Put up 5-10 million dollars abandon your business and family and make us a nice place to race our 10 year old boats.

I have not spoke to Adib yet but I believe you will have that opportunity. You talk big you a betting man? In the interim I am confirmed for Bimini are the SVL's gonna be big talking trailer queens or do a REAL offshore race with no excuses?

Steve and Mike. you make some very good arguments. And it all seems black and white, from your perspective. You have pretty much laid out your case and how the past has hurt you. I would love to hear from some of the OSS guys who have made the decision to boycott and why. Right now, I am only hearing one story and it is pretty convincing, but no one from OSS has come on to defend their posistion.

I am reluctant to believe anything anymore until someone from the 03 SC fleet comes on here to explain why they did what they did..

I dont know if that will happen as most of them aren't involved anymore or at least a good portion of them!!!!

I am sure I am biased but I also know how this works.

How many sponsors does OSS have?
The racers would demand to see the LLC bank balance how is the OSS bank balance?

If a good sponsor $200K annual came along could you provide Corporate Hospitality, TV and a solid schedule? If the answer is no to any of the above you cannot retain that sponsor.

The problem is it takes over a million dollars annual to deliver a return for a 200K sponsor, You cannot land just one and make a profit. You need a group of sponsors so you can spread your TV hospitality and schedule cost. You also usually need to have a race near their HQ (that can cost 200K).

But hey what would I know about business you guys are the captains of industry around here.

in addition to above, I would love to hear exactly how the SC fleet split up. Which only killed the sport even more. Once again, I heard one side. I know the 850 class had something to do with it. Anyone care to comment?

Good points Bruce.

If you look at who stayed racing Supercat in 2004 (who ran in 2003) it was primarily the Mercury Racing teams. Tom A. ran Sterling in 2004 but was Mercury 2003. Todd W was Mercury 2003. The top team (also best funded) just plain quit. You must rember the 17 Supercat teams voted 14-3 in 2001 for a single engine for Supercat.

What was never expected was that Sterling would win the bid by such a large margin. The Sterling program would be less than half the cost of the 850 deal.

Well I think we all know the common denominator: Mercury Racing

I would like to see more of the SVL's that are sitting on the sidelines get in the game. George thinks the Wild Ride may show up. Randy has already expressed his willingness to accommodate you and George feels the same. What is keeping Bruce from showing up? Bet? Like what? I man a modest working man.
Trailer queens? We are racing our boats. REAL? do you mean the Bimini run?

I am trying to make it for Sunny Isles.

Randy has just recently done that and we appreciate it. I am not sure Sunny Isle's is possible (scheduling) but I am working on it.
Yes I mean Bimini last year the SVL's except Lavey sat there and missed a chance to run in the open ocean. They hide saying oh you have a Vortec well the rules are simple less than 30" less than 550 ci" normally aspirated only. If anyone wants a shot at us we are coming. If you don't run it don't whine.
This aint lake racing

Steve, I had no idea George would consider the Bimini Run. I have previously joined with Freeze to run with him. I don't see it as a race, but I guess I should. I head to head battle is more exciting anyway. Last year was reasonably calm. We will see soon enough what this year will bring. I hope it is bumpier.

Looks like Brad is in according to his web site.

Second Annual Sunny Isles Beach Offshore Challenge June 11th-14th, 2009
May 5th, 2009 by Pig Iron Racing
The overwhelming success of last year’s event sets the stage for this year to be bigger and better than the inaugural event. This three day event will start on Friday morning when at least 50 boats are expected to make this year’s Bimini Ocean race. The Bimini Memorial Ocean Race allows for a great variety of boats to race “Old School”, to Bimini and Back.
On Sunday the action starts at noon with Offshore Super Series racing in all classes. Viewing is excellent anywhere along the Sunny Isles Beach to the north end of the Haulover Inlet.
Join us at both events, we are running the Friday, Bimini and back event with our Pig Iron 540 and the Sunday OSS race in Vee lite with our Mercury 525.

For more information about racing in the event, being a volunteer or sponsorship opportunities, go to www.SIBOffshore.com and www.Offshoresuperseries.com
