The Great Unification

I own a canopy spec boat, and yea it's safer. But the real fun was in the old open boat. The fear factor goes way up. I love it. And yes that was the crazy bastard Haggin riding shot gun. Smitty

it,s all good,, we all know we need to do something or else?? we need to do something to unifiy and smitty is sitting in the best place to start it , he has sponsors,,,,race sites,,,and boats,,, the big question is how many and what classes, ?....like i said there is only 3 or 4 people that can do anything about,, ( smitty is one of them) so really there is two issues here ,,unifiy rules between org,s ,,,,unifiy rules between classes, to lower number of.

But, if that's the truth in today's economy. You have to win to get sponship in the extremely expensive elite classes, work with it. Common sense says play to your strengths. I don't care if you hand out 10 flags in a 20 boat heat. Just make them as similar as you can for now in average lap speed, and hand out an extra flag, trophy, and prize money for the "Top Gun" of that heat. Then have a Top Gun National Champion from all races points combined or something.

Like Jim said, a 525 boat may have won that distinction in Clearwater????

paul u lost me run who together ? everyone,, me against smitty ,, give me a flag for a single eng,,,giv smitty a flag for 2 engs. and smitty another for beating me ?

Amsoil outran every V on average speed but, the extreme cats would have been tip gun.

There are enough flags getting handed out already. Heck you can break on the first lap and still get a flag in some cases.

so your saying they would have to finish to win,, damn someone will complain about that

All right racers. I spent all day counting races and created a spread sheet to show who did what. The list is number of races in descending order.

Typhoon ran the most at 18. He had two boats congratulations Randy. It is 19 if you count the time you throttled for Bruce..:cheers2:

Gary, Miccosukee V, Amsoil, Simmons Racing round out the top 5.

Geico, Ryan Beckley, Aqua Mania, Hard Rock and Rock Star finish in the top 10.

See the complete list

you missed a couple, WHM 6 (biloxi, cumberland, michigan city, sarasota, clearwater, ny), Fury 5 (biloxi, cumberland, bimini, sarasota, trinidad)

trinidad should count for two or three races.... nearly 200 miles total, that's an entire season for some smaller classes.

Sean,, Nice try. The Super V's have never out run the Super cats. In 2000 the superVs were going 140 with 1200's and the Supercats like Drambuie were going 160's. It takes 1500's in a V to run with Supercats.

The 100 miles in 6' hasn't happened in at least 10years. Maybe longer.

I do agree if it were to happen it would be a good race.

Drambuie wasn't a supercat it was an open boat I just don't remember the designation the ones that were the old modified class were the new supercats thats the ones they were outrunning bro!!!!

The class names change like the weather. I know how fast the SuperV's In 2000 were going. I was right in the middle of it. The Big cat what ever they were called that year were faster. Should I pull out the pix and the record books?

My point back in that post was the 525 Cats run about the same speed as the Super V unlimited . The extremes may be a little faster but, they usually don't go fast very long.

Sean. This is from '99 Ft Meyers in May.

I recall it was Washington later that year when the SuperV's hit 140 and 142.

I got a head ache

No, I mean similar speeds, but give the current racers what they need to attract sponsors. ie;, Geico would not be a sponsor like they are for Miss Geico if AMF ran a SVL. Just not as much publicity/bang for the buck (you know what I mean)....

So, you'd take Cat Outboard, SV (Dean's - Smitty's etc), P2 @ SBI 105mph, (any other class where the boats run an approximate 105 top speed?), etc and run them all together. You would not have eliminated any classes, sponsors would still be able to be approached by a winning team to show advertising return on their investment. But add a top gun trophy/designation for who finished first overall for that class (approximately 105mph runners). That will make it so there is a reward for competing instead of just pulling off the course, or dogging it, if the only other boat in "Your" class breaks etc.

And put money there so if Dean not only beats Smitty, but Ryan in Outboard and Double Trouble from P2, he gets Top Gun National Points and an extra Grand or something....

And, if the current classes are a little apart on speed, tweak them with weight or ? to make them equal and start them together with a single pace boat.

SVL would approiximately be with P4 SBI, P2 OSS, etc.

But, the biggee, Superboat Vee and Cat would race together in their TopGun category (probably have to tweak Cat), with Cat 850, 750, Vee unlimited Extreme, etc. but tweak them for the one biggee trophy/Top Gun designation for more "Racing" action.

Turbine, nothing you can do that I know of, but I'm not so smart so maybe there is.

These are the statements that rub people the wrong way. Racing is racing. Some of the best competition today sorry to say, is in class 5. These guys have ten times the experience and seat time you do. The word amateurs should be used a little more carefully.
I raced a boat that I owned. You dont want any part of that thing. Just a piece of postive advice. Smitty

I guess it could be taken the wrong way. I don't think being called an amateurs is a bad thing.

racer/diehard/competitor gives 100%

A amateur does not, or whatever tearm fits better.

A class 5 guy that prepares there boat the best the can, and races it 100% in my opinion is a racer.

The guy that just shows up to be on the race course for fun, or to say there a boat racer is an amateur

And my point would be to run them together. Start with one pace boat, have them not only get their flag for the class they are in, but an extra trophy, and prize money, for Top Gun overall of their group.

That way the sponsors are happy by sponsoring a winning boat, egos are happy by winning their class, but actual racing, and bragging rights, happen too so fans and potential TV is also happy. It's kinda like melding the old open class and the new 37 classes into a group of 3 or 4 like you're talking about, without all of the fallout.....

To me an amatuer is someone who hasn't received prize money yet.....:sifone:

But really, an amatuer races locally for fun (but still to win), a professional follows the entire circuit to try and get a National Championship....
