Sgt. Andy Eckert was born to into a military family in Fort Bragg, NC in 1981. He was raised in northwest Ohio.
In 2005, when his son Myles was only 5 weeks old, he was killed in action in Iraq.
On Feb 7, Myles, now 8, went to lunch with his family in a Toledo area restaurant. In the parking lot, he found a 20 dollar bill. He was excited. He thought about buying a video game.
But then Myles saw Lt. Col. Frank Dailey from the 180th fighter wing, based in Toledo, and thought of his dad, Andy.
Myles decided to do something different. He decided to give the $20 to Lt. Col. Dailey, and wrapped in this hand-written note.
The note said:
"Dear Soldier -- my dad was a soldier. He's in heaven now. I found this 20 dollars in the parking lot when we got here. We like to pay it forward in my family. It's your lucky day! Thank you for your service. Myles Eckert, a gold star kid."
Then, on the way home, he asked his mom to take him to his father's grave, alone. A single set of small footprints marked his steps. There, he must have told his dad what had happened.
