WELLINGTON — A masked gunman is dead after he exchanged fire with an armed resident inside a Wellington home overnight, Palm Beach County Sheriff's officials report this morning.
Deputies were called to 1382 White Pine Drive near Wellington Trace and Forest Hill Boulevard at 1:50 a.m. Monday. A woman called 911 and reported that someone had broken into the house and been shot by her husband.
The shooting was at 1382 White Pine Drive near Wellington Trace and Forest Hill Boulevard.
Investigators said there appears to be no connection between the couple and the suspected invader.
When deputies arrived they found a man with a .40 caliber gun and dressed in all black and wearing a black mask shot to death inside the home, according to Sheriff's spokesman Pete Palenzuela. The man was black and appeared to be in his late teens or early 20s, Palenzuela said.
So far, he said, there appears to be no connection between the couple and the suspected invader.
The couple told police that they were sleeping in their bedroom when their dogs, a Jack Russell terrier and a German Shepherd, alerted them to the stranger in their home. The husband had access to at least two guns in the room, Palenzuela said. It is unclear which gun he grabbed when going to confront the intruder, he said.
During the confrontation both the suspected intruder and the resident fire their guns. The suspected intruder died at the scene, but neither husband, nor wife was injured, Palenzuela said.
Palenzuela said witnesses report the couple are well-regarded in the neighborhood. The husband is a school teacher, he said.
Investigators remain on the scene this morning as the sun comes up.
