Swimming pool has a leak, any ideas....

The pipes from the skimmer go down. Sounds to me like a leak behind the skimmer. The leak will be at the same level where it stopped dropping.

I have narrowed it down, maybe. I will try to continue solve the problem tomorrow. The F'in pool company who wants to diagnose the problem is on the well......obama plan, called six times today. "oh pool in house on the beach mentality". It could be thousands to repair, but David it would be an insurance claim, we will work with you...... I think it is the bypass. Although I hate domestic work and I have no time for it right now. These guy's have just pissed me off. I think i can solve this problem without insurance. Any other ideas as to what I should look for? Thanks to all for the help guy's. End of rant.

Thanks Ratickle, Good idea. I shall check it out. My guy's need a day off and tomorrow will be a play day at club Dave. My wife thinks I am nuts but we all need a day off from the race cars. I think we should be able to at least solve the problem....however bbq, boose, weather and good boating weather.. well a bunch of race car guys working on a pool...can't be good...but a good time.

High Tide...........most of the info given is WRONG but they meant well.

Don't call a pool guy (they will more than likely sub it out anyway), look for a guy that specializes in leak detection/repair. IF it stopped at the skimmer your leak is in the skimmer. A "tic tac" sized piece of grout missing can cause an inch a day leak. You will most likely never see the evidence of a leak. Where the plastic skimmer meets the fiberglass pool is the joint I suspect is your leak. If your pool is tiled look for it where the tile meets the plastic skimmer. The weir door (flapper in skimmer) may have to be removed to view the area from both sides (it is spring loaded/snapped in or some have a single screw holding them down).

1. Does the skimmer pot (where the basket is) go dry when the water level drops below the throat of the skimmer (where it meets the pool)? If so your issue is going to be in the base of the skimmer or the plumbing (decent amount of work/ not for amateur).

2. Anything else at that same level in the pool (where the water level stops) like a jet or anything?

3. The pool won't pop if the level of the water is higher than the water outside. When in doubt you can pull the hydrostatic plug in the main drain and it will allow the water to upflow into the pool if the water below the pool gets higher than the pool floor.

4. The pool may have a "sump line" that you can hook an external pump to to keep pumping out the ground water under the pool therefore keeping the pressure low/ not popping.

East coast a find/fix (simple epoxy fix, no plumbing/deck work) should cost you less than $350. Don't know about your area but I suspect it could be cheaper. Pictures of the skimmer/ equipment could help a lot. PM me your # if you have any questions, 19 years in the pool business and counting.

Keep in mind it is Sunday..........pool guys are not like plumbers, on call 24/7. Your job is not an emergency and will not be covered by insurance unless the house settled or something major.

Hey, we tried. I'm an electrician and have watched, with interest, a few pool being constructed. The info I've offered is from my observations.

And I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night :26:

we have two pool companies in our small town that have there own leak detection systems, I would think in fla it wouldn't be that hard to find what you need. try adding a little more water than where it stopped going down & squirt some food coloring around your skimmer & watch for the dye getting sucked in.

Well...After getting tired of waiting for the lazy ass pool guy not to show up I shut the pool off for a week and let the pool continue to drain. it is not the skimmer. I then let it go to the Jet levels. Not the jets. The only thing left is where the pool light is and I can not let the water level to get that low. But right now it is my best guess and I have not got a solution for this to check it out further. My water bill however is stellar. Can this if it is the problem be fixed under water? Any ideas would be most welcome. Oh and by the way the pool guy still has not shown up.
