Swimming pool has a leak, any ideas....

Two weeks ago I started to lose 2 inches of water ever two days. This pool is in my living room. No exterior signs of water. It has to be going somewhere. Any ideas. My only domestic quality is that I live in a house but I am losing a ton of water. It loses it whether it is running or not. I live on the water and do not want this contraption blowing out of my floor. Pool is glass no cracks, nothing obvious..... However the pressure or flow seems less and the pump is hotter then hell. Thanks as allways for any help.

Need more info.

A pool in your living room?

Guess is a return line, or input line, has a hole in it and the pump is hot because it is sucking air.

You need to turn the pump off and see if you lose the same amount of water.

When our pool developed a leak, we just left everything off until it got low enough to find it. I believe I heard you could get a pool guy with a heavier than water color dye that would go to the hole and you could see where the leak was, but we didn't try that.

It looses the same amount of water on or off. I let it run to the base of the skimmer today. I will see where it is at tommorow. problem is the damm thing is in my house. I do not see water anywhere. I get the feeling this is not going to be fun. Good suggestion on the air leak, because the flow rate is down considerably. Thanks,

Above ground pool or Built in???????

What????? :biggrinjester:

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask!!!:26:

Do you have a sump pump? Can you smell any chlorinated water in there? If you can't see the water leaking anywhere, then its clear the underground piping has developed a leak. Leave the pool alone until the level stabilizes. That'll give you and your pool repair guy a starting point to localize the leak.

Good luck.

If it stops going down when it reaches the skimmer, you'll have a good starting point to look.

If so, put the flow valve on bypass to the skimmer and run from the bottom pickup only and see if it still stays stabilized at that level..

I live on the water. If the level gets to low then the pressure from the tides will pop the pool from the floor due to pressure. Remember this in the house. At least it is winter and the tides are low. I cannot see the water leak. My pool water is treated with ozone, no smell. You would think I would be able to see where the water is leaking from but I must be erroding the soil beneath my home somewhere. Just sucks. I think the dye test might work but the are 7 water jets as well as the main feeds. You would have to rip my house apart to get to the problem...oh well

Good idea. That is why i let it get to that point. Thank you. I agree.

filter location and any exposed pipes?
fiberglass , gunite, liner pool?
sounds like the house is on a slab? you might just have a loose fitting at the wall of the pool
how cold was the outside temp before you noticed a leak?

Drain it, fill with jello, invite some hot chicks over and don't worry about it til your o'lady gets home...:26::26::sifone:

Pool is glass. Pump, filter and jets controls are above ground. House is built on a slab. Yes the weather was cold. The pool is at least 16 feet from the externals. The pool is only 10,000 gallons. Solar heated and was 85 degrees. Noticed the leak about 2 weeks ago.

a quick test would be to use a shop vac and pressure test the lines.
you would have to close the supply line at the wall of the pool and then connect the shop vac by the filter. you would have to do that with each of the lines.
more than likely you have a crack or loose fitting. the big question is where and how to get to it.
generally there are no fittings between the pool wall and the filter. can you get access behind the pool walls?
if you cant, I have heard of some people putting a smaller dia. flex pipe/hose inside the leaking line from the filter right into the pool.
when we had a slow leak in our pool it was just behind the pool wall (cracked fitting )
good luck, those up here in the real world have our pools outside and they are all frozen this time of year. LOL
