GULF SHORES, Alabama -- A boat carrying five college students on spring break crashed on the Intracoastal Waterway Monday night sending one woman to the hospital and another individual to jail on charges of boating under the influence, according to Alabama Marine Police.

About 7:30 p.m. the boat was traveling west on the canal, east of LuLu’s at Homeport Marina, when the driver swerved to miss a barge and hit the shoreline, said Marine Police Sgt. Jody Kelley.

“(They) went between the barge and the shoreline and the barge was tied to the shoreline,” Kelley said. “When they did that they actually hit the shoreline and the barge. One female was injured and transported by helicopter and one subject was arrested for BUI.”

The arresting officer was not in the office Tuesday morning so no names could be provided. Kelley said it was his understanding that most of the individuals were from Alabama but were on spring break from a Mississippi college.

Only the one woman was injured in the accident. “She had a head injury,” Kelley said. “That’s the reason why they transported her last night. I don’t know to what extent; she seemed to be getting a little disoriented to begin with but she was calming down before we left.”

After the accident, an uninjured female passenger drove the boat down to LuLu’s, where authorities met the group.

“It could’ve been a lot worse,” Kelley said. “They were able to drive it back but it does have considerable damage to the bottom and side.”
